Carols been pushing me into an idea we kinda spoke about, having a fair bit of kit now and ken saying I could fill an observatory Carol suggested I should pass on the little knowledge and big passion for astronomy I have and pass it on to others and start an astronomy group in Cumbernauld,, thought long and hard and with the help of one of my old muckers who runs a Facebook page called old photos of kilsyth,he let me put up a post to see if there would be any interested in starting a group to do hands on astronomy..take cameras,, binoculars,,scopes ext to a local spot and have a go at it,, put post up and two mins later have one guy interested and four likes... plunge taken😃

I totally agree. When we get visitors or new members to our club I like to push 'Astronomy' in general, not Video Astronomy. After they have been there a while, THEN they get bombarded with Video Astronomy

So started getting by backside in gear in the hope it kicks off, put a cheeky offer in for a camping table and stools to sit kit on and a red light torch,,never needed one before in my local zone lol, sent for a USB splitter cable and a spare power lead to power my allview mount, bought a couple of new batteries for carols mobility scooter so I got her old ones,, should do a turn powering the allview. So should be ready to make a start planning a star gazing session soon, weather crap as usual,, raining.

Have posted a plan of action that could be set in motion if the gods play fair. Stage one.... secure observing site,, local councillor contacted and she has sent email to parks dept,, hopefully hear back this week.
Stage two.. there is an unused building at the site, and I've enquired about possibly using it,, unfortunately no power and needing revamp, but have enquired about a grant,,this will happen if stage one gets go ahead.
Stage three,,, if all other stages are given OK..set up a clubhouse and look into receiving and doing broadcasts,, outreach programme,, encourage all walks of life, children to pensioners, fit to inform,, disabled astronomy,, I have also said I wish to push the boundaries on video astronomy,, given the people I have spoken to over the last year, scotland is way behind in the video sector with the exception of myself and geoff from Dunfermline astronomy society,, he pushes as hard as I do,, but I want a functioning astronomy club that is more hands on video wise and have been preaching the good word,, I have one moderator so far and very happy given it's not a week old,,I have blasted the page with all I can from utube links to telescopes for sale on eBay,and I think it's working,,as soon as I put up a post I'm getting four hits in ten mins,, which is good given only 16 members

Just wonderful stuff davy. Good onya mate! You never know, if a councillor got interested, I'm sure a local Govt grant to build a "community observatory" would happen real fast LOL. Then you could put in a couple of domes!

Thanks for that link Rob ... neat idea to broadcast to your astro club group. I am going to have to figure out how to do it with ShareX and do exactly that to the local facebook club out here in Brisbane. Those who can't attend our star party's can look online. Thanks for the great idea and posting that link! Course my mobile may not have enough upload bandwidth but I wont know until i try it.

I think you only need about 2 mbps upload speed for 720p. It'll be a little less taxing than using something like Google Hangouts since it's only one way. If you're using a mobile device, be aware that it may use about 1GB per hour if you're not on wifi.

I use three network for my mobile broadband,, most carols most nights so didn't see the point getting broadband for the flat, The broadcast side would be further down the line if all things went well,, granted use of the area and then getting grants to do up the building,,long term project if all goes well,,, just looking for access to land to observe from,, if it doesn't o to plan I have another place in mind,, but plan A is proffered route

This will be a great thread to follow. Watching a new club develop Davy, keep records of everything you do to establish it. Dates, copies of any notes you make, names, photos of members and the first Observing site, etc. It will all be history in the future and it's always hard years later to recall how a club started, or find any old paperwork. Our towns Historical Society has copies and some originals of our first public 'expressions of interest' meeting advertisement, notes from that meeting, flyers, ads, newsletters, and all sorts of paperwork from us. Historical Societies love all that sort of stuff Also try make the history of your club public knowledge on sites like Wikipedia. It only has to be brief, but it is recorded. Here's ours: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snake_Valley_Astronomical_Association
