You're going to need more bandwidth to view that live.

Talk about other cameras. Has anyone ever bothered with autoguiding ?
Weather has been crap so I uploaded phd2 last night and gave it a go with my 224 on an ST80 (didn't have a main viewing scope as i don't have the attachments to piggyback the st80 yet). Thought it would be difficult or complicated. But it was easy and worked really well (between the clouds). Well it tracked a star for half an hour.
I suppose its pointless when observing objects for just a few mins on an 80mm refractor.
But I just got an 8"sct. Thought it might be good for that if i do longer focal length for smaller objects. BUT i understand this might need a longer focal length guide scope ?
It was fun to try. But am I overcomplicating things ?

Yeah Chris, my fav kit ... 8" f/5 newt and heq5 was a second hand imaging rig and came with st80 and orion ssag. I guided with ssag and phd (orig version its that long ago!). I guided with that right up until I realised i could go 90 secs unguided with the heq5 pro and was doing 30 sec or max 60 secs shots so stopped guiding. You can guide with a finder/guider (50mm x 160-170mm) right up to 1500mm focal length but above that it is recommended to go to st80 to use as the guidescope. So your st80 is perfect for 8 sct. Though it's a bit of heart in mouth moment to drill and tap the SCT to fit the long dovetail ... unless you are lucky and yours has tapped holes already. In which case make sure to get the right size/fitting rail to attach to it as MUCH better to get correct fitting rail than use a non fitting one and have to drill and tap the holes in your precious sct! LOL. BTW in my version of PHD it didnt have a PA routine, but in PHD2 I think it does. But either way ... In both my old version and the new PHD2 you can use the RA/DEC graph to drift align quite quickly ... as the graph showing RA drift can be adjusted via the AZ/ALT bolts very quickly ... lots faster than eyeball drift aligning. Here's a link which has lots of PA methods but look for the heading "Drift Alignment Using PHD Guiding Software". njstargazer.org/PolarAlignment.aspcheers Chris ... and yes isn't this weather the pits! Wonder how Ken is going with the floods n wind n stuff? And just noticed that linked site has an error in his instructions ... step 2 he says to select a star near the meridian at 0 degrees elevation ... that's wrong ... it should be near meridian and 0 degrees DEC IE up where the equatorial line crosses the Meridian ... as that's what get used to adj the AZ bolt. Yep, and they regularly swim up the Parramatta River in Sydney right up into the suburbs where people swim Bull Sharks have been found swimming 4000 kilometers from the sea in the Amazon. Crocodiles become a big problem in Australian floods too, getting swept into people's backyards and even into their houses
