Hi Guys... new member here from australia. Just got a 6" skywatcher dob a few weeks ago... was great but i found it hard to find the things i wanted to see.. or if i was even looking in the right place so ive already upgraded to a 10" skywatcher goto dob and love it... tho i havent had much chance to test it out seems its been cloudy here. While i do like the views i get thru the eye piece i REALLY like the views that i see others get from a camera so i kind of want to start going in that direction. I was looking at the revolution imager kit and im tempted to buy that cos it has everything included and would save me having to get bits and pieces from everyhwere... and i have watched BallaratDragons review of it which actually led me to this forum lol. Before i bought that kit i just wanted to ask to make sure that it would be usable with my 10" goto? Look forward to any advice u guys have.

Welcome to the forum, your goto dob should be ok with inward travel using a camera, nice scope I have allways fancied one of theseu partners brother in law had the 12" ( non goto) and it was a beautiful scope ,love the way it collapsed for storage.should have some great views with this scope,,great thing is you can use the truss slides to help achieve focal point as well

G'day David, welcome mate.
Great to see another Aussie taking an interest in Video Astronomy. You will enjoy the views you will get with the Revolution Imager. It is a very basic camera, but even though I own top-of-the-line Video Astronomy cameras I seem to have more fun with the Revolution cameras. I have all three versions of the Revolution Imager so if you need any help with settings etc just ask.
They are far better than I expected them to be.
Here's a video of mine showing what you can see with the Revolution Imager in a scope similar to yours. This is done using the older Revolution Imager (Version 1, model 2) and a Meade SN10 f4 10" reflector and a very mild 0.8x Focal reducer:

Hi guys appreciate the help. Ken u said u have all 3 versions? on the revolution imager site the one they have is R2... so is there a newer one that i cant see on there? I watched all yr videos earlier today and was very impressed how it looks. I love that everything is in one kit makes it easier to get started in this type of thing. I have just been out testing my new scope out tonight and it was awesome with the goto.

David, their are only 2 models of the Revolution Imager. The current model is the R2. The original RI (now dubbed the R1 by the public, not the manufacturer) came in 2 different versions. They had different sensors and firmware. The R1-1 was a pretty good camera straight up and came with the 11673 sensor, but when fitted with the 11811 sensor in the next version (the R1-2) there was a very noticeable improvement. The new model, the R2, also comes with the better 11811 sensor but better firmware than the previous 2 cameras. So, even though there have been 3 versions, they are really only 2 models. R1 & R2. If you buy new, you will get the R2. If you buy used you could get any one of the 3 cameras. R1's are in a grey case and R2 is in a black case. I did a thread in here showing the difference between the 2 different sensors in the R1: astrovideoforum.proboards.com/thread/1384/comparison-images-revolution-imager-camera

The Skywatcher should work fine. I've used my cameras with my 12" Skywatcher Dob (my M16 avatar was taken with the Dob). Mine is a manual sitting on an Equatorial Platform. The collapsible dob works very well. In-focus is never a problem with these. Plus, the skywatcher uses extensions for all eyepieces. As a result, if you need infocus, you can just remove the extenders and place the camera directly in the focuser hole (it's a 2"). You might need a short 2" to 1.25" adapter if the camera won't sit in a 2" hole. The ZWO cameras will fit in either a 2" or a 1.25" hole.
For a 1.25" adapter, I used the short adapter from my Celestron 130SLT. It was designed to slip into the 130's 2" adapter for 1.25" eyepieces. The Skywatcher is different in that it has a 2" to 2" extender, and a 2" to 1.25" long extender. For eyepieces, you would normally use one or the other, but not both at the same time. The short stubby 1.25" adapter give much more infocus. I can bring a camera to focus with a 0.5x focal reducer without adjusting the truss rods.
You'll probably be using a focal reducer. I believe the RI comes with one.
Ken, can the RI sit in a 2" focuser hole?

Ken, can the RI sit in a 2" focuser hole? The 2 models of the R1 can, but the newer R2 can't. The R2 case is shorter but wider than the original.

Thanks for the great info guys.. Am i able to take photos with the monitor at all or is it strictly just for viewing whats on screen? Can u connect the camera to a computer at all or would i be better off looking at another camera for that? There is just sooooooooooooooooo many options out there right now for this stuff.. and i like that.. but its overwhelming to know where to begin with it.

Hey John, drats (for you) ... iceInSpace had an R1 up for sale just during the week but I just checked and its now pending sale. (Unless you've nabbed it!) Yes, great to see another Aussie getting into EAA. Where do you hail from? There's a couple of us EAA'ers in Brissie and happy to help you out. Also, judging from your forum name look like you may be into music or hifi too. I am. All my hobbies have involved copious amount of cash Cheers

It may have the older sensor, these cameras were originally branded the ln300, the mallincam kit was released shortly after mike from oc had the initial idea to sell a full package for new video astronomers.

David, 1. No, the monitor doesn't capture images. 2. It's easy to save images with a computer simply by adding a little device called a Video Grabber (I think OC Telescope now include a Video Grabber in the Kit). You also get the benefit of using capture software to tweak the live view and make it look even better than using only a monitor direct from the camera. 3. The malllincam version does not have remote control or the better sensor and firmware. On my Video Astronomy website I explain how easy it is to use one of these Analogue Video Astronomy cameras with either a monitor or a computer. These are the graphics I made for my site which will show you all you need to do:
Here's my site if you want to look around: ballaratman.wix.com/videoastronomyJust another little tip that you may notice in my first graphic: You don't have to use only the supplied Monitor. You can use any TV that has a yellow AV (RCA) input.

Great news on the purchase,it's a good set up for folk starting into video astronomy,I wish this set up was available years ago, would have saved me buying wrong equipment,,but thats why we started this forum,to help out newcomers to the hobby,on the main forums, sgl, cloudy nights a lot of info gets lost as posts are added and if the topic isn't current you have to go looking for it,,on here we try and help the new starts get a feel for equipment,,there is a lot more going on in video astronomy,,we have seen big leaps in technology and variations in use of cameras intended as guide cameras, software has really helped put va on the map. Your caught in the va bug now lol.

Man, I'm late to the party! Welcome David! You definitely got the perfect starter kit - and one that, as Ken eluded to, you really won't outgrow.
