Just way to many cameras out there now. It is almost overwhelming.
Atik has QC issues of that I do know. My camera so far has not failed or had issues, but of 6 cameras 4 I know of failed now. So buyer beware . Lomg story short. 4 of us bought our cameras as a group to save a few $$. Out of the 4 cameras. 2 failed out of the box. One was replaced and the replacement failed a few weeks after. Another I know went back because screws were rolling around inside. They say they are working on these QC issues , but I have yet to see improvement. Great camera when it works though and easy to use. They are fast to replace the failed ones or so far they have been. Only a little more time will tell if they have fixed the QC issues.
Just my 0.2 cents worth.

There is another thread in here somewhere stating that Atik has also raised the price of the Infinity since it became popular. Not a good idea Atik.

A 33% failure rate of early stock cameras doesn't sound that good especially if some poor star gazer has strained his budget and not told the wife that he's done it!! I take it that is was the Dealer that replaced the duff camera and not Atik directly? It strikes me that if it is the Dealer replacing the camera then there's a 33% chance of them replacing the original camera with another duff camera from their own stock. Perhaps, this thread will confirm my decision to hold off buying a Infinity for a few months although not for my original reason of not liking the hiking up of the price.

Price of an Infinity hasn't changed in Sydney. Still $1699. Maybe we are to cheap here and go for other cameras (like me) so they have a glut of them.

Hi Chrisy, well, I make it that an Sterling Pound is worth $1.94 Australian Dollars. So I calculate £859 sterling pounds to be worth, at present, $1668.05 Australian Dollars. That means Australia was paying more for the Infinity at the start than the UK was!! The original UK price was £799 Sterling Pound which equals $1551.54 Australian Dollars so it looks like Atik has decided at the moment to round off their Infinity price to one global bench mark, but I'm guessing they won't drop their individual country prices should any currency falls or rises in value against other currencies.

Maybe some starting great price ? Sorry to go off topic, I thought we got it bad in Oz. But looks like you cop it almost as much as we do in terms of pricing. Figure this, based on 1 GBP = 1.94 AUD, 1 USD = 1.35 AUD Prices in $AUD Atik Infinity = Optcorp (USA) $1350. Bintel (AUS) $1699. FLO (UK) $1666. So we are both about 26% above US price. BUT. Celestron Evo 8 (not that I'm going to get one). Optcorp $2160. Bintel $3099 ($2999 at Andrews). FLO $3055. So we are both about 40% above US price. Maybe Atik pricing in Aus/UK isn't that bad Or am I missing something here. Chris

You missed the GST on import which applies to the TOTAL cost of purchase/handling & shipping costs and if > $AUD1000 then you have to pay the 10% GST. Currently 10% but the Libs want to raise this to 15% soon, and for it to apply on any value, not just stuff over $AUD1000. And there's also the cost of hiring an online import broker to send you the paperwork and such ($AUD50).
I've been watching the Bintel price on the Infinity as it's actually not bad. Here's the math ...
Opt $US1000 + $US50 shipping = $AUD1417.50. Add the 10% GST on import (10%) = $AUD1559.25. Add the Import broker charge ($50) = $AUD1609.25
So Bintels $AUD1699 isn't too bad.
The UK price is interesting as isn't Atik a UK company!? You'd think it would be cheaper. IE How can they sell it in the USA for less than they do in the UK?
I was/am still saving for an Infinity but am concerned about the high return rates if you read forum threads. One I saw an Astro club bought 4 and 2 were defective (was that you scopesnc?). Chris Applegate had to return his. DonBoy had to return his. So, kinda holding off purchase for now and sticking with ASI224 and Canon.
Cheers

That puts out pricing in a better light especially sincevyou say they are a uk.co
The failure rate is a bit concerning. Have atik been in the astro camera field for long ?
You might have to wait for the next big thing Ken and Howie ... and then for it to be tested etc etc.
It's total rain here the past few days ...

You might have to wait for the next big thing Ken and Howie ... and then for it to be tested etc etc. How'd I get a mention? I'm not buying one, Chris. I have no intention of ever buying one. Not my style. I like my Video Astronomy to be as close as possible to instant. Not long exposure I see the Infinity as an Imaging camera that is capable of capturing images faster than traditional Imaging cameras, but still way too slow for my liking. And Yes Chris, Atik has been making Astronomy cameras for a very long time. This is their first attempt at a 'Video Astronomy' style camera though. They are one of the better known 'Imaging' camera manufacturers.

Sorry Ken - i attributed the infinity quote to the wrong person.
Given the long time atik have been at it, quality control probs are surprising

Well, as I said before I think I delay any thoughts of getting an Infinity for some time taking into account the hiking of prices and the problems that seem to be occurring with the camera. I hadn't seen anything regarding problems with Atik quality control and the Infinity until this thread but it underlines my decision to hold off, which is a shame because I really would have like one for this year.

I see the same thing Ken does...
There has always been arguments as to what is considered Video Astronomy. Early adopters believed that "pure" Video Astronomy is instant results without any processing. When it was discovered that many cameras do some processing inside the camera, the definition changed: Video Astronomy was when no images hit the hard drive - and for systems where that was the case it was called "Near Live" Video Astronomy, which really only differed from Imaging in the number of images stacked and the length of exposures.
Now that software has advanced, the lines are all blurred. That's why you see cameras (that never would have been used in Video Astronomy if software had not advanced so far) being so popular. That's why so many are to DSLR cameras for live views as well.
It's an exciting time but there are a lot of vendors still trying to find their way.

Ive gave up trying to work it all out now the way its all went. Live,is there such a thing,,eyeball to brain,,internal stacking...lol The light that we are seeing from stars ect,,how old is it before we capture it. Internal stacking in cctv cameras on sense up. Cameras using external sofware stacking.
To be honest,I think its down to personal preference.. We have a video forum, yet we have no videos,,only frames of video posted. ,,its the what came first, the chicken or the egg... things are well and truly blurred . I tried to work it out with byeos and it does a full circle ..dooh

Hang on for a bit, till we've had our vote to stay in or opt out of the European Market, if the vote is out the Pound will tumble like a rock falling off a cliff and you just might grab a bargain.
