Here in Australia we are surrounded by Kangaroos, Wallabies, all sorts of reptiles, and general Aussie wildlife on a daily basis, so a trip to a Zoo that lets you handle some 'out-of-the-ordinary' animals is always a bonus. This week I travelled way out west to a small country town called Hall's Gap, and they have a Zoo where you can get up close and personal with all sorts of critters from around the world. Not like other Zoos where the animals are behind bars and you don't get near them. I had a blast!!! Here I am with some friendly Meerkats which left a nice collection of deep scratches in my arm after they had a fight over the food I was giving them And check out this cheeky little fellow sneeking around the side to see what's going on

They seem tame enough, especially that one in the middle wearing a shirt John, they are actually quite savage. In the wild they don't mind a Human coming close, and even occasionally patting them carefully. But they will turn on you real fast and take some nasty bites out of you. During the feeding of them at the Zoo the staff are standing very very close in case the Meerkats decide to have your fingers for lunch instead of a handful of grubs When I was feeding them, the two on my lap decided to have a fight over the last few grubs in my hand and one attacked the other, and as he fell he clung to my arm with his needle-like sharp claws and tore me open in 3 places, and then continued to climb back up and attack back at the one who attacked him!!! All this about 2 seconds after these photos were taken So, Tame? Not really. I would say they 'tolerate' humans until they don't feel like tolerating us any more
