Ken, Davy, & Rick, Thanks for the kind words about my new observatory. When I'm not using the observatory I hold the roof in place with a turnbuckle near each corner. The turnbuckles are on a slant to hold the roof securely against the fixed wall at the office end. It takes only a few minutes to unscrew the turnbuckles and then roll off the roof. One thing I have learned is that the original hooks I used are not heavy enough. I've bent them tightening the turnbuckles. I've bought some heavier hooks to strengthen the set up. Tim

I think that will be better than a tripod, tho still a bit of a tripping hazard. Do you have any red rope lights that you could put around it? Yes Rick, the base of the pier will be illuminated by red LED's. We have to take precautions because it will be open to the public.

Yep, yep! I had a chance to snag a roll of red rope lights and they've worked out well for Halloween, Christmas, etc.

Tim, one of our members suggested holding down the roll-away shed with Turnbuckles. But we think we have a way of holding it down with some welded angle. It will hold the shed down at all times without having to undo/do-up anything.
Once we start construction I'll post pics.

That's a nice big area for scope and control room.
You'll need an interior designer by the looks of it - come up to Sydney's Eastern suburbs and I'm sure you'll find someone. I can see it now "Shed beautiful", or maybe on a home reno show.

I'm really struggling to justify spending a load of money on a observatory just now,, The weather has been dismal for so long now it breaks your heart to look at a scope now,, I may scale things down to an astronomy shed,, warm room and just having to set up a scope outside the observatory,, now looking at a 8x6 metal shed, Just set it up and pour a concrete base inside it as a floor, insulate walls and panel and plan a roll off roof mod into design. This has been my worst year yet weather wise

You could install a pier and have a shed roll off from around it.
In winter, you'd take the mount off of course, but otherwise have the scopes on the mount on the pier and open/roll off the shed from around it for use.
