I'm looking to get a wider fov scope for video. I currently have a C8 sct (with a 0.5x reducer).
Currently tossing up between two second hand scopes. A sykwatcher 102 acro for about $180 Aussie pesos (500mm FL), or $200 more for an orion ED80 (600mm FL).
What would you get ?
Don't know if I'm better off with the bigger/lower FL acro or the smaller apochro. Is the apo worth the extra cost for a newbie like me ? Or should i just pull my head in and stick with the C8 for a while ?
I would also have to get stuff to stick either onto my eq-mount.
Sorry to bug you all with so many questions since joining the forum ...
Thanks Chris

Lol..thats what were here for..the extra money is well spent on the ed80,no matter what you want to do..the ed80 fills the gap..good visual scope and brilliant for astro photography and video..if you buy that you wont want another scope.in my opinion

Chris, have a look at my website where I compare Video Astronomy Screen Grabs from these scopes: - 120mm f5 Achromat - 6" f5 Achromat - ED80 - ED100 - SN10 10" f4 Schmidt Newtonian Most of the examples shown are using my home made 0.58x focal reducer. A few are with other focal reducers. All images are with a 1/2" mallincam sensor. Take that into consideration when seeing the FOV from each scope. My screen grabs will give you an idea of FOV in each scope/FR combinations, and quality of view. HERE: ballaratman.wix.com/mallincam

So +1 for the ED80 from Davy, and the ED80 pics looks much better on ballaratman. I'll see if I can run the $$ to it. Hmmm, need a good story for my wife. Or maybe I can sell the moonlite focuser that came with my C8.
Surely under $400 is an okay deal for a used ED80 in Aus.

IF you can find a used ED80 for $400 in Oz. Most people ask around $600+ for used ED80's.

Yeah Chris, the fire ws half an hour east of me and travelled east. So I was safe . . . so far All I can say about that ED80 is if you believe the optics are OK then grab it. That's a good price. He says he is also including the Tube Rings and an Auto Focus Controller (whatever that is). You'll need the Tube Rings.

I spend a lot more time with my 80EDT triplet APO (80mm aperture / 480mm focal length (f/6)) than I do with my VRC8 (8" aperture / 1600mm focal length (f/8)). Sure, I lose a ton of light gathering, but its nice and small and easy to balance and easy to grab n go. I love it for DSOs.
Remember that good video cameras essentially give you results of a 3x aperture scope - so its like I have 9"!!
