Hi , I was kind of looking for some advice As to basically connect and record to my laptop Since getting hold of a cctv cam I've been looking to try it on my telescope and record to my laptop I don't know if I've missed something I've bought a second DVr grabber iam connecting the cctv directly to the grabber but no matter what software I use I only seem to be getting a blank screen So any help on hooking it up to my laptop or have I missed something ? I've never used a cctv before or tried to do any recording via one it is functional if I connect it straight to my tv Any advice on setting up would be great Thanks sy

Hi sy..no stupid questions on here..we all went through the same and were all here to help you. .as john says the more info the easier to give you the right advice.. I will split my advice into two parts 1.if you have the available connections and adapters plug your cctv camera to a tv and use the camera on screen menu to get a visual reference. .if this is ok. You may have A focal issue depending on scope you have 2.if above is ok it may be a faulty video grabber or software issue. What we need to know is. camera..make/model cables and connectors usb dvr telescope make/model have you up n running in no time..davy

Thanks for the advice guys Well I have bought a cheap ish second hand Fujitsu cg 301pa1v I have allready taken the filters out And focusing I solved that problem after an hour or 3 trying different methods and I believe I've solved that I have connected it through my tv all works fine I plan connecting it to a little meade etx 90
I did buy one of them grabbers and no on my PC Being on xp no joy I tried for hours with nothing but a black screen , eventually I hooked it upto my house computer windows 7 and it ran fine Upon that I went ahead an upgraded my laptop to win7 Still with no joy with one those grabbers easy caps I believe mine were called and I also bought a similar one with 4 dvr sockets still no joy on my laptop So I am starting to think maybe the laptop maybe too old . I have read somewhere a USB TV tuner may work I do have dslr and webcam and such like I like the idea of the video method tho , and the one I have got hold of is quite compact Now if it will be sensitive enough yet iam unsure of as sky's have been very cloudy And being new to astronomy also money gets tight buying all the equipment And well I were to thinking my laptop would be ideal and portable for grabbing the video
Thanks for the welcome to the site also and thanks for the advice Sy

Hi sy Bearer of bad news..the fujitsu camera is not going to be good enough The camera has no sens up ( slow shutter) the sens up or accumilation lets the camera capture the photons over a larger time ,a bit like bulb mode on a dslr the higher the sens up the longer the light Is captured ..in simple terms. The camera also has a low tvl..530..this makes a poorer image on the screen..you may capture the moon but not much more im afraid..
Can you tell us your location.. camera I recommend to start off with is the samsung scb2000, this Is a brilliant camera to start with and is easy to mod, if you go to the Samsung website download its data sheet and compare specs..the scb200 Is an older camera but a good camera for your set up..keep an eye on ebay for bargains. .the phil dyer camera is another good camera..

Hi sy..I bought a four channel dvr from ebay, I never had any joy with it..the time delay from live image on camera to screen capture was terrible. . video astronomy can get expensive. . my advice..stop buying bargains.. whatever you look at send the guys a link and we will check it out and advise you if it's ok and a good price.. Lets go back to basics and get you on track Telescope , make model= Mount/tripod= Power supply to camera= Cable from camera to usb video grabber = Davy

Ha yes I agree with the buying cheap stuff of eBay Probs ends up costing more The camera does have the sense up tho yes In manual mode And in reality a much better chip on it than my webcam for planets moon at least I have soon realised yes it's a money hobby So yes I will keep my eye open for a better model camera maybe The reason I fancy giving a cctv camera ago is to save on sat clicking a button on my dslr with no live view My scope is an meade etx 90 with autostar And yes I believe that's not over clever for long exposure work I have mounted that to my skywatcher eq2 mount for now in polar position and again I know not a clever mount Obviously later down the line I'd be looking to buy a much better mount So may stick to dslr and piggyback work Until I figure it all out Thanks for the advice Regards Simon

Si, I think Ken uses a scc camera, but they are quite more expensive than a scb camera as you said you want to keep costs down, the scb 2000p is a great camera for the price if you can get a used one, they're used world wide with good results. You can normally pick them up for around £50.
Like Davy said that fujitsu is not quite up to the job, poor resolution, yes it does have sensup but only up to 40 so you will be limited on what you can observe, the likes of a 2000p will have sensup up to 512x
The etx 90 is a slow scope but with having a long focal length, using a .5 focal reducer you could get it down to in the region of F6.5 - F7 and focal length of 650 - 700.
You'll need a tracking mount to get decent results, if you have a auto guider as well it will be better still. John

Hi simon..I started out with the etx80 and a Philips webcam tried the dslr on it but the weight slipped the clutch..I also done the astrophotography and was getting help from steve richards and was getting ok at it..but I was bored and blooming freezing standing out in the cold doing this ..no live view either..and thought wouldn't it be better with a video camera..I didn't think it was possible at first but a lot of searching and reading and asking a lot of stupid questions I got there...designed this site over a year ago to help folk wishing to do video ..and with help from the other admin and staff we have this dedicated video astronomy site..to promote and help people into video astronomy. .davy

thanks for that advice guys i am thinking of setting guiding up and understand i maybe in need of a reducer well i have spotted a few cameras at a reasonable price so i may purchase one the scb 2000 p. and well yes to be fair, i have a lot of learning to do. and things coming together slowly while learning at the same time. sorry to ask another question ,now would the camera need the lens ? as the cameras at a reasonable price dont come with one . Or possibly if needed would the c mount lens of the old cam ive got fit ? rather than me starting a new thread and thanks both for the advice again and yes davy iam kind of getting older and it is all a new hobby interest for me ,but true it can be cold but well i think i will stick to it now ive started thanks simon
