Been flat out with too many events as the year starts to close down. Had a big 'End of year' Ride 2 days ago and yesterday I was still recovering from it. See You Tube Link at the end of this post. My son was taking Video over my shoulder as we rode along). Tonight I had a two hour drive to attend a special evening where I was awarded a Medal. The Australian 'National Emergency Medal' (Photo below Video). Now I am just sitting back, adding a few more bits to my new Video Astronomy website and posting in here Here's the ride I went on: and here I am at the Medal award night tonight. Me, front and Centre Attachments:

Hi John, Yes mate, we get cold weather. We have just come out of a verrry long winter (but our cold weather is probably a nice day to you). We do get extremely hot weather here though, often sitting between 30 and 40 degrees for months on end. But when winter hits it gets cold, wet, and miserable. Thanks for the congrats. Yes, I am a Volunteer fire fighter with CFA (Country Fire Authority): www.cfa.vic.gov.au/The Medal is in response to 'Black Saturday' back in 2009 when an area of my State was destroyed by bushfires. Over 1 million acres burnt and killed 173 people. It was declared a National Disaster. The Temperature was around 46c. I did three tours (4 days in each tour) as a front-line Fire Fighter. Here is info about the Fire: www.blacksaturdaybushfires.com.au/The Medal requirements are here: www.itsanhonour.gov.au/honours/awards/medals/national_emergency_medal.cfm

Ken I remember this being on the news over here, must be a bit frightening being on the front line what with the heat and the size of them flames shooting up into the air.
Just had a good read of the links you put up, made some interesting reading on ember prevention on your homes. So you have to have a large swimming pool or a big water tank for the sprinkler systems, do a lot of homes have them, and just clear the perimeter around the property.
Luckily for us over here we don't get them bush fires, usually its moorland fires which are nowhere as intense as the one's you get over there.
Looks like a 24 /7 thing going on for fire prevention on when to do planned burns.
I know when I was staying in California [ use to go over for 2 months of the year for several years ] that I shouldn't throw my butt ends out of the car coz it could start a fire plus the heavy fine if caught. Something you would never think of over here.

Made anitial approach to pipeband I was with, heard they neen drummers badly..ah but and the big but is , I had a wee bit of a fall out with the lead drummer a few years back. .arrogant git of a man..he's been at a good few bands since then and nobody wants to play for him anymore, so he is struggling to build a drum corp no ..so I spoke to a mate to go and enquire if he was desperate that I would play for him..no holding my breath over it..shoyld maybe find out Thursday after there Wednesday night practice. ..

So you have to have a large swimming pool or a big water tank for the sprinkler systems, do a lot of homes have them, and just clear the perimeter around the property. In the more affluent suburbs just about every second house has a pool, but out in the outer suburbs maybe every 4th house. Out in the country where the fires usually happen, not many places have pools. Pretty rare to have a pool out in the country. But we have Dams. Anywhere from about 30 feet across, to anything up to an Acre in size. Larger properties have many dams for their sheep and cattle. But with all those swimming pools in suburban back yards, about 0.01% of them have a fire fighting pump connected. Whereas, out in the country about 75% of properties have a fire fighting pump connected to a dam. It is also compulsary out in the country to have a clear area around your house out to 10 metres. It is Illegal to clear native trees, without a special permit, beyond that 10 metre line!!! (weird regulations).
