Hi Chris, RG59 is the standard 75 Ohm coax cable used for CCTV cams. It will be heavier and better screened than what your using but I dont think it will improve picture quality unless your getting interferance. Cat 5 and 6 is made with 4 pairs of wires a total of eight the size of telephone wires. You just add a thing called a CCTV Balun at the camera end of the wire and one at the grabber end (both are BNC). The bonus of using cat 5/6 is it rejects interferance very well and can carry the camera signal over 1Km without any loss of signal. The other advantage of Cat 5/6 is you only use two of the wires for signal (picture)you can use one of the other pairs to carry the power all down the one cable. You can also get 4 way CCTV Baluns which means if you were remote you can run 4 cams down one cable which is handy Hope that makes sense.

Thanks Carl. Can i ask what is "interference"? Is that when you see horizontal lines jumping about?

Hmmm if what i understand from what your telling me Carl could i complicate things and kill two birds with one stone here... Ive been trying to find an extension cable for my autostar hand controller. And apparently i can do it with a cat 5 cable. I found this: Heres the thread it came from www.weasner.com/etx/autostar/as_cable3.htmlPossible to have just 1 cable doing the hand controller and camera?

Yes lines horizontal or vertical etc would be interferance. The hand controller would have to be separate as it uses all the wiring. I had a read at Weasners site and have to say there seems to be conflicting info on the type of cable and wiring? Some say normal LAN others say crossover? With the Synscan its just straight through normal LAN cable. If I hold the two connectors together on mine the coloured wiring matches so to me pin 1 at both ends is the same, pin 2 is the same colour etc. If you had to buy this site does them for Autostar. www.astronomiser.co.uk/pwrhbx.htm. If you had a photo of both ends beside each other that would tell a lot.

Yeh i noticed that too about contradicting each other. Its all very confusing haha! Here are some pics of both ends of the autostar cable If its any use to you... in the right hand pic... the right cable there is the number 12 in the middle of the plastic clip. You cant see it but on the left cable it has the number 10. Oh and BTW i do get quite bad interference! Sometimes it can be really bad with the horizontal lines dancing about all over the place.

Ahh your wiring is opposite at each end so a normal LAN wouldnt work. So it is a type of cross over. The Synscan is the same at both ends so you can use a normal LAN to connect. Try moving the camera power lead about to see if that effects the interferance, usually it comes from it and the camera cable picks it up. Here is the normal LAN same wiring at both ends.

I bought a crimp kit from ebay and different rj connectors because I was fed up getting wrong cables. .means you can cut them to exactly the right lengths needed. ..tutorials on utube. .

No Chris it wont work! This is why the other site is confusing. Cat 5 "cross over" means only four of the wires are crossed over, where as all of yours are.
You may have to make one or get one off Astronomiser.
Sorry for the bad news but dont want you damaging the handset. You could buy a straight through normal one and reverse the wiring at one end.

Hi Carl, I have made several data cables recently, is this simply a case of reversing the order of the 8 wires? Or if you like turning one RJ45 connector upside-down? Cheers Carl

Why do Meade need to do things different all the time... its the same with the power cable for the mount. Every man and his dog uses the normal 2.1mm 12v thing...but Meade need to use some other random thing just to annoy me!!!
Cheers for that Carl Astronomiser looks like the best option then.
Back to the video cable. Considering i do get this interference using the RCA cable (it also has a big dent in the cable from when i slammed the patio door on it haha). Whats the best option BNC or cat5? Im thinking BNC just cause the camera and hand controller use BNC so it would mean less connectors? Also im guessing with cat 5 i need to open it and play about with wires etc?

Also im guessing with cat 5 i need to open it and play about with wires etc? Think I would agree, BNC method probably more straight forward. Cat 5/6 more benefits if running the power or another cameras down one cable. Standard RG59 coax will do it with a BNC at the cam end and a RCA at the grabber end. Meade do tend to complicate things as you can buy 10/15 meters of straight connected Cat 5/6 for pounds. Once I set up my two cams on the scope (main and finder) I will be using RG68 (shotgun cable) used for Sky plus its twin coax and double screened, I use it in my work so why not

Only thing I can think of Karl is they just reversed the connector in the mount so you have to buy their cable?
