Hi Allan best I can share is I use a Sammy 2000. The lens is a manual 2.8 to 8mm. I managed to get a labgear full housing with built in heater/blower brand new for £20 a bargain!
As you say control is a must, I can use the w5 controller using coaxitron for full menu control.
Its currently not all sky at the moment but a new diy casing will do it when I get around to it. Also the Dynamic range of cameras can be coax controlled with the same controller.
If using during daytime you would need a DC auto iris due to sunlight, I just use at night on a mains timer. For this work I havnt had to go above x12 sense up.
Software is Handyavi which works great and records the meteor before it appears so you get the whole trail.
Hopefully something useful in there.

Any input is always useful Carl. Unfortunately no sdc 2000's going cheap, si I might as well get something else. The PD1 would probably do the job, but with a controller its getting pricey. As those 3 cams are rs485 I assume I can make a controller somehow. Actually i think i saw one on thier website for about £7.50. I will be speaking to someone in the morning to get some info.

I have a samsung weatherproof ip66 dome cam, I modified it to use a 180 degree lens. However light reflections from all my street lights really mess up the image. If your skies are dark you could get by with a dome. I have yet to do a perm solution, because the sreetlights wont allow a dome, and I need the dome for waterproofing

I will have the same problems lee. I have a tall and extremely bright streetlamp at the bottom of my garden. I had thought about asking to have it shielded, but as it is almost in my garden I don't think it would make any difference. You may have noticed the obscured part at the bottom of my image last night. That was just a piece of insulating tape position on the lens to hide the light. Without that I had fancy donut reflections right up the frame with an extremely blown out portion at the bottom. I have scrubbed the dome camera for this reason and will get a box cam and mount it slightly higher to reduce the problem further.
Both the other cams are exactly the same it seems, just in a different format. The board cam will be easier to mount and weatherproof, but the box cam will take better lenses and has a couple more features. They are both rs485 Pelco D and I can get the hand controller for peanuts(about $10)
I may order it Monday, then work out the mounting and think about weatherproofing. Or I may just cover it when not in use. Plastic bags are cheap.

looks like it may even have the same chip Chris. Reading the specs on the box cam I am looking at, it just looks like a slightly improved Sammy 2000. I do need a wider view and even the 2.3 lens i have could actually be a few degrees wider, but its not bad.

Progress update. Cam is finished. I bought this cam. rfconcepts.co.uk/camera-wdr-58ep-2686.htmlThen I housed it inside a length of 4" drain pipe like this. Initially, the lens was level with the top of the pipe and I stuck the clear dome on top, but I found that the cam was seeing every bit of dust on the dome, so I bought a drainpipe coupler and raised the lens up into the dome so that any dust on the dome would be out of focus. This coupler also just slips on an off the black pipe so lets me have access to the lens when needed. Like this. The housing is held by a tube ring and U bracket which allows me to tilt the cam to any angle. I can also rotate the cam just by turning the mast form ground level. This way I can cover almost all the sky. Easy access from shed roof for tilt adjustment if needed. The mast almost reaches the ground so can be rotated easily. Rain cam

Job well done Allan! You could probably reach out of that open window and turn the mast too Be good to see a night view from it.

Hi allan..there was a fluid you could use on your car windscreen to let you see out if your wipers packed in maybe that might help rain on dome

Cracking job Allan, not sure if you have the capture software yet but UFOcapture and Handyavi both do a free trial.

Ken, I had thought fixing the mast next to the window, but its just out of reach and means going upstairs to rotate it. Then when making my mast, I thought why not have it reach down to the ground next to the patio doors. It is now only 8 feet from where I sit at the comp.
Davy, I will do some research.
carl, I am going to get Handyavi and run a feed to a computer inside the shed with a splitter. I can leave it running all night and save any captures to an external drive for viewing later, indoors. Does a Handavi licence only cover one computer, or will it allow me to use on 2 comps.

But did you just buy one licence to cover both installations carl, or do you need a licence for each comp.
