ken , the news is showing the bush fires down there, and people not escaping in time. horrendous. keep yourselves safe, underground storage for valuables is an option that would allow people to get on the road, instead of staying to try and fight the fire.a house can be rebuilt.your detail of the large equivalent areas of europe which would be affected brings to note a looming problem highlighted by scientists in a discovery channel documentary last week on chernobyl, they found that the large forests in the exclusion zone which died, have not rotted away, and are lying there, tinder dry. all the fungal spores and insects that recycled the trees etc into the soil had also died of radiation exposure.fighting any resulting fire in a radiation suit and mask would be difficult.

Sadly, yesterday one of my close friends (known him since we were 12 year old school kids, we are now both 62) lost almost everything in the bushfire. His house will be liveable after he gives it a big clean up but his house is the only one standing in his neighbourhood. All his neighbours have lost their houses. He did lose a lifetime of Vintage and Classic Motorcycle restorations though, also his new Harley, plus cars, tools etc. He is tonight laying in Intensive Care from a Heart Attack, waiting for a helicopter to fly him to Canberra hospital, but the smoke and ash in the air is preventing the helicopter from coming to the hospital, and all the roads are cut. This only the first month of our summer. WE have 2 more months to go which are usually the hottest months, and our fire season continues well into March as well.

They are evacuating hundreds of thousands of people from communities all over New South Wales (mostly south coast NSW) as the forecast for the next few days is even hotter with stronger winds. Many fires that are already out of control will all turn catastrophic late tomorrow or Saturday.
Highways are jammed by traffic leaving. This is going to be a Hell weekend starting tomorrow!
The huge fires down here in Victoria are also still out of control and 17 people are missing from one community. Searches will start when the fire passes and they can get into the houses of those missing. Currently it is all still burning.
So far I am safe as I am about 300 kilometres west of the big fires.

We have schizophrenic weather. Yesterday there were record high temperatures and the country is burning This morning I am down the beach , it is 13C ,cold and raining .
Lets hope the rest of Australia gets this rain and gives everyone trapped or fighting fires a bit of respite cheers Paul

All is good now. The torrential rain killed the fire.
