Yes Davy, they are pretty bad. I am travelling into the area tomorrow (northern New South Wales) to visit my Dad and see my Mums memorial plaque for the first time. It's the 1st anniversary of her passing away and it wasn't ready in time for her funeral last year.
I'm hoping they don't close the highway or I'll have to turn back.
Here's the latest video from today:

Scary stuff that video,, respect to the fire fighters,, and stay safe. Hope you make it through to see your dad... I've made a few grave memorial plaques over the last approx four years, I'm looking at buying a CNC to carry this on,, lot of folk can't afford a stone headstone,, I've made ones for free to help folk out,, usually make them from a slab of concrete that is styled like grey slate, I then engrave trophy plate with picture or other personal details,, if also done ones with sublimation on A4 sheets,, costs me about £30 to make but it looks very professional when done,, a local business does small wooden plaques about 6" X 4" in wood on a stake for about £70,, hate seeing folk ripped off during there time if grief. Hope all goes well mate

Ken, they showed some of that footage on the National news tonight. They are brave boys. After the Black Saturday firestorms a number of years ago,I remember a fire expert stating that the lethal radiation distance from the firefront was about 9 times the height of the flame which can be more than 50 metres high. If you stayed to save your house ,there would be nowhere to hide. cheers Paul

Totally unheard of until then. Anyway, I made it up here, and the closest fire to where I am is 25 kilometres (15 miles) north of here at Morriset and about 40 kilometres west of here at Wollemi National Park. Roads are closed north and west of here. Tomorrow is expected to be hot and windy again We are fairly safe here.

Davy, it depends on what insurance cover you have. Most are covered by Home insurance.
We made it through all the smoke today. The highway was choking in it. The fires have spread wider and more have started but the Fire controllers have announced that tomorrow will be a much better day and the 'Catastrophic' category has been lifted.
Still many fires out of control in 2 states (NSW and Queensland) but they might be able to get on top of them and reduce them a bit tomorrow.

Home now. Absolutely wrecked from the drive. 1100 kilometres each way. Fires are still bad up there. The air is full of smoke 24 hours a day and we drove through solid smoke for about half the trip. Once we got south of Canberra it cleared up. Nice to be home again

And a month later, the air is still fill of smoke - even in coastal Sydney. Virtually every afternoon the sun is just a dull red object

Yes Chris. The current report is more than 90 fires burning in New South Wales alone! Some way out of control. Going to be a bad year for fires this year. In fact it already is

It's unbelievable. Today Sydney was total smoke - I couldn't see 100m down the road.
And I'm not allowed to say anything political ... Must have been bad up northern NSW Ken

Yes it was Chris. My family up there say it's even worse now. They haven't seen clear air for over a month!

Seen on the news the ash ect getting washed up on the beaches at New South Wales Yeah davy, that ash gets everywhere. It covers cars, gardens, everything. Some fires are so huge, causing extremely high temperature updrafts, that burning smouldering sticks blow along hundreds of metres in the air for 10 - 15 miles, then drop down and start new fires. Ash Wednesday and Black Friday fires were so massive that they dropped burning sticks 40+ miles in front of the fire!! It's quite weird seeing a glowing burning stick land near you!
