Thanks Howie. I do aim to keep the histogram off the left edge and not too far to the right. As you say, for those dim objects , I am continually manipulating gain and exposure. On sharpcap, I cant put it on max gain as it is a white out and the histogram is way over to the right unless the exposures are very low. By low ,I mean under 5 secs. If it clear tonight, I will have another go on the same galaxy. Carlos, I had a go at Startools today. I started with your suggested sequence but the result was awful. There is a bit of a learning curve but at least i have made a start. In sharpcap a 58s x 6 stack saved in a FITS file was 68 meg, the same stack saved "as seen" in png file was about 700k..nearly 1% the size. Startools recognizes FITS files but Astrotoaster doesnt. The files need to be saved as tiff or jpeg. . This was post processed in astrotoaster. I click on autostretch and save. That takes about 1 minute. However, I had to convert the FITS to tiff in Fitswork and then import to Astrotoaster. That problem is solved by saving the Sharpcap file in jpeg. For these dim galaxies I am still finding the 290 mono the best camera for defining structure. cheers Paul

All my experience is with the Risingcam software. I have no idea how Sharpcap works.
The general idea is that the camera captures the entire range of visible frequencies of the object, except for IR and UV that I always exclude. I always leave all the default parametersin Risingcam.
Then the Startools software (or any other) adjusts the data obtained and removes electronic noise of all kinds until the object data is as clean as possible.
Each program is a world and that is why in all forums there are special sections for each one.
Another thing, each camera / telescope combination has a specific way of working, including the % of histogram peak to be used.
What I say are general ideas but everyone must experiment with their own equipment.

Paul: This photo has a lot of information ... and a lot of background noise. It also has vignetting and bad white balance. This is what needs to be removed and this Startools does very well.
The main process is to remove all this unnecessary widow with Autodev, Wipe and Flux.
Send me an original image of the camera, post it in the Startools thread of this same Forum, taken as I told you, all the default parameters and we will do a step by step so you can see how this works easily ...

Howie, Astrotoaster will actually recognise the fits format, but I cant open the file. The Sharpcap file type reads "FITS" and astrotoaster reads FIT. I assume there is no difference,but it wont open them . cheers Paul
