Be fed up reading about this lol. Been trying out my kit and deciding what to take and use,, I'm actually thinking on going simple,, take the heq5 for a nice steady mount , canon 600d and laptop using backyard Eos, Was thinking about getting ed72 but not had much use for kit I already have over the last year. Given this I'm looking at this. www.tobydeals.co.uk/en_GB/product/samyang-14mm-f28-lens-for-canon-mount-en1.html?gclid=Cj0KCQjw5MLrBRClARIsAPG0WGxfYzIc6uXx4fIGhnKDvey__pExnE2k5xc4pTovlZb__ki-TLtnbB8aApKREALw_wcB. Think Howie has something like this,, I fancy the versatility of a fast wide angle lens rather than a scope,, I like photos I've seen taken with this lens ,, castle or a landmark in the fire ground and milky way wide field,, will skip between astrophotography and video ,, looking for simple no hassle astronomy these day's

GDay davy. I've used the standard "kit" Canon zooms (18-55mm and 55-250mm) with good results on the 650D (modded) and 700D (unmodded). I had to shoot 3 to 4 times longer compared to using the SW200P 200mm f/5 Newt. You'd expect this longer exposure time due to the smaller apertures of the lens. The f ratio in those "kit" lens is f/3.5 to f/5.6 so good for astro work.
Over time I've found I get easier to process images from f/5'ish focal ratios compared to harder processing with lower f ratios. Focusing is certainly MUCH easier at f/5 than f/2. But I also find rightly or wrongly that shorter exposure times required for the lower f ratios somehow bloat/over-expose stars and really bright stuff much worse than shooting longer exposure times required at f/5 and f/6. One day I'll figure out what's wrong with my processing, but for now I prefer around f/5.
I've used and since sold the Rokinon 135mm f/2 prime lens which I used on the Canons. The Rokinon and Samyang brands sell the exact same kit. Bloke in my astro club explained to me the difference was Rokinon may (underline the word may) be higher quality as some say they do a quality check on the lens, while Samyang do not! Hence Samyang is the same lens but at lower price. Who knows if this is true or not?
Oh yes ... while I have made flyscreen masks for the small canon lens and they do work, I've crushed so many as they been tossed around in my boxes of stuff, that I prefer to use Canon Live View zoomed via the EOS Utilities 5x zoom and then the 200% button on that (so at 10x zoom) and just use the old eyeball when the stars width looks the smallest when 10x zoomed. Very simple. No extra fragile mask to carry. Works very well too producing nice sharp focus.

I've been looking at as many utube video's as possible on this lens being used in astrophotography and has it's good and bad points,, Good point on the canon c sensor bit has 91 degrees of vision but the lens has a bit of off focus on edges, so would need to crop it out, Like yourself Howie I've used standard lenses and had good results and assumed that going down a few f stops and going wider I would get better results,, Making me doubt the lens more than I was, lol. Back to drawing board .π
Possible the 72ed back on the cards as it gets great reviews

Helping out Scottish astronomy in the limelight.. lol. While back I bought a canon xl1 camcorder from a chap called Johnathan,, he asked what I was going to do with it as it's not exactly a palm corset,, said ..pipe band tutorial videos and I fancy trying it out on my telescope,, we've seen the pictures lol. Jonathan is a freelance videographer and does work for the BBC,, he said the BBC is crying out for home grown things to highlight and astronomy hasn't been done in Scotland,, did I know anyone who could organise something, ππ€£ππ€£π erm possibly lol.
I brought in David Millar admin of astronomy Scotland Facebook group to help ,, great amount of members to tap into, Johnathan brought in Chris from hopscotch film group and, today I brought in Danny Cameron who is a astrophotographer and a volunteer at the Galloway forest observatory,, Any today Jonathan has said he will fund the project at the Galloway forest star camp,, hopefully after first footage hopscotch film group will come in board and negotiate BBC getting involved.. Great day for Scottish astronomy π

Davy, one HUGE thing I've found over the years, is that pretty much every lens, every scope, every camera, every mount can work! They can all produce wonderful results for the astronomer and AP and EAA communities! It's all about just getting out and you learn every time you use, no matter what ya got. Cheers and best wishes for the camp ... clear skies!

Very true,,sticking to what I have for now,,got tons of gear,,got more testing done last night and I favour the DSLR over the zwo,, I like the fov compared to the zwo 178,,, definitely more at home using byeos and getting the hang of astrotoaster. Although technically it's astrophotography it's a lot of images at high iso and 8 second exposure,, so they pop up quite quickly on the screen,, need to watch your astrotoaster tutorial again to fine tune myself still not completely there,, close very close,, just tweaking settings,, I think problem is my light pollution

Great day for Scottish astronomy π Woo-Hoooo!!! Well done davy. Hope to see you on TV soonΒ Β Cheers Ken You know more than anyone, that my ambition was to bring astronomy groups together and hopefully through media it can happen,, astronomy is a great hobby and has many things going for it. Enjoyment of seeing the wonders of the night sky. Capturing it and producing great images For me it's about the journey , I've purposely held back and not went at it hell for leather,, seven years capturing the moon lol us a start for me. I want to promote astronomy and get folk working together,, both myself and Ken have tried with various ventures and vendors,, nothing seemed to work,, don't ask me why,,we bent over backwards and spent a lot of time chasing the dream,, cross communication between groups involved in astronomy Going to give it a go in my own back yard before I have a go at the world again Have a good vibe this time,, Scottish astronomy isn't as big as the rest of the UK,, with two other blokes in the same mindset maybe we can pull something off. Johnathan the film chap ran through a format yesterday of how he perceived it should go,, Bit of background on the folk going to the star camp ,, filming equipment and seeing images and a round up chat at the end. I told him that was predictable and folk see this type of format in television all the time. I've gave him a new route to try 95% of astronomer's never meet and never will but great friendships are created through the use of the internet,, I've asked if we can pull footage together of folk using forums, Facebook pages and groups arranging star camps a meeting up for the first time,, helping each other out,, giving help and advice,, and capturing the night sky,, meeting up the next day and telling how there night went,, and if folk are having problems help them out. To me this would highlight how were a band of brothers and sisters helping each other out. I'm hoping it goes well and hopscotch film group buys into the idea and can get the BBC to take it on. Hopefully it will increase the prospect of trying to get more annual star camps going in Scotland,, bring in astronomy clubs and pull Scottish astronomy closer,, if we can do this it's a game changer for astronomy and Scotland

Looks like it will be a forty minute documentary done about Scottish astronomy at the star camp,, David Millar of the Scottish astronomy Facebook group done a video interview with the director tonight,, I was asked to do it,,but I'm not involved in Scottish astronomy or been to the star camp before ,,so left it to David,, was a bit nervous he said before it as was told the interview would be shown in schools,π No one for the limelight,, I dodged that bullet, lol,, I'm just glad to set things up and get away out the road,, my agenda is to get some nice dark skies and image away till my wee heart is content
