Thought I would expand this post and it may be a help to others.not make mistakes I make. Hopefully uncle John can make the trip and I can get my hands on his lx90 on an eq8,, phew,, what a rig 😁 But if he can't planning to do it the roughy toughy way with a tent. Two nights at start of November under the stars,,then two weeks in bed with the man flu,, carol think's I'm nuts,,, Thank God I won't be the only one, lol. Quite a few folk in sgl forum heading up for the star camp and folk from astronomy Scotland Facebook group going as well,,
Plans 😁 Well freezing my nuts off will be on the agenda knowing Scotland,, So planning as if I'm going to the artic circle in a monsoon is the general idea 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Booked a pitch with electricity hook up, Tent I'm looking at us a vango odessey 6 man tunnel tent you can stand up in with a tension band system if the weather gets a bit rough,, Blow up mattress for comfort and keep me off the ground, Will have electricity in tent and that will run an electric fan heater, Cooking will be done via a small microwave,, no messing around with camp stoves or cold meals,, microwave will do hot meals, soup, coffee ect, job done. Four seasons sleeping bag should be warm enough.unless you go commando 😁.
Will be taking laptop, new battery just fitted, 240v to 12v power supply for scope and possibly take star adventurer , 2 dslr ,, plan so far

I imagine Ken has photos of snow around his place as even here in Brissie it's 0 or below just an hour or two away. I think I heard on ABC TV News that Victoria currently has a snow-line of 400m. So lots of areas and towns have snow. Our AstroFest two hours north west of Brisbane just finished last week and due to the cold many were setting up these hydroponic tents in the link below ... totally dark inside, insulated too. Guys said they were able to sleep in the day they were that dark inside. And snug and warm when the overnight temps were below 0 Celsius. They also are not that expensive looking at the website. www.jkhydro.com/product-category/tents/?fbclid=IwAR2u1R6SFq9bpKnl7QAQLK4pDjZtr3o6l8Gkm5_-cuPCnRp-bfak2OkbIEU

We had a bit of snow in Bendigo but it all melted on hitting the ground. Nothing like you had Ken. If the temp hits zero ,I will have a glass of red and a nice warm bed thanks.
Howie,I was in Mooloolaba a few years back when it was zero degrees. I went for a swim (in a wetsuit with a group of old diehards)but there was not a breath of wind, not a cloud in the sky and just beautiful weather. From all accounts, that is the sort of weather required in Queensland to get down to zero. It aint like that down here . cheers Paul

Got to be at least 25 Celsius for me to get in the water, Paul! When younger I'd go windsurfing in any weather ... but now have no desire to get into cold water.
Speaking of wetsuits ... I know Ken does gold panning. I saw recently on TV there's some guys in Tassie who don thick wetsuits and then lie in shallow streams of ice melt water. They can quickly cover large areas of the stream. As they dig fingers under rocks, the natural stream water flow washes the fine debris away from between their fingers and (hopefully) revealing gold flecks and small nuggets. Working their way along the streams was quite quick and it seemed a really neat way to prospect! No heavy digging, no sluce nor gravity jig and all that gold kit required. Just a wetsuit and a hardy disposition!

Yes Howie, it's called 'Sniping'. It is similar to 'Crevicing' which is the same thing, picking gold out of crevices in the rock on dry land. Sniping is Crevicing underwater. Some do it to many metres depth. Too cold for me

At that price is doesn't even matter if it gets storm damage and you throw it in the rubbish. Saves having to pack it all up again at the end of the camp I've seen many cheap tents in rubbish bins at campgrounds Looks perfect for what you want.
