Here are a couple of images done on lx90 8" alt/az tonight with full moon .FR was a combo of Meade 6.3 and a cheapo prostar 0.5 with a diagonal in between. Not sure what f/ratio that becomes. Both images are of Centaurus A 6X10 secs stacked. The RT287 was on RisingSky and the ZWO 290 was Sharpcap. Part of my quest for short exposures with sensitive cameras on an alt/az. Quality is obviously nothing to write home about but interesting to compare the 2 images. Also ,I tried the 287 on the C6 hyperstar but was unable to get to focus.

Wow Paul, huge difference! The RT looks heaps better.
Were all the settings similar for both: Gain, Brightness, Contrast, etc?

Ken The settings were probably a bit different for each . The 287 was done on RisingSky of which I am less familiar than the 290 on Sharpcap. The gains were set so that if I increased them any more ,there was a whiteout. I had the histograms looking very similar but on sharpcap there is only the gamma and not the brightness and contrast bars so they were not touched. It does look like I needed to brighten up the 290 but dont know how to other than the histogram and gain. The same can be said for the zwo 224. Any advice?

The 2 zwo cameras 290 and 224 come up better on the C6 hyperstar than the LX90 hut could not get the 287 to focus which was disappointing because C6 is my fastest scope in alt/az

ZWO224 6x10 cheers Paul Nope, sorry Paul, no idea how to brighten in SharpCap. I don't use it because I don't like it, and it has limited abilities (no brightness as an example, or contrast or stack limits).

ZWO224 cheers Paul Hi Paul, just checking ... sorry if you already do/know this .... you don't start stacking in SharpCap until a single frame is nice n bright and looks good. You adjust the single frames image using the histogram on the Sharpcap top menu bar and the right hand side menus gain + exp time, and right hand side menus gamma (contrast), brightness sliders. Once you have that single frame nice n bright you then click the stacking button. Then when its stacking you then switch over to using the stacking windows histogram tab and adjust its multiple white/black/mid point sliders to adjust the image.

Here's the youtube video (an old SC version) which I used ages back to learn how to do the single frame adjustment and then stacking .... You'll notice in the description he's using a LN300 Sammy on 2.5 sec exposures in a 6SE in a red zone and gets M51 galaxy with one minutes worth of stack.

Thanks Howie. I suppose I havent done the 287 justice by posting images from my lx90 which I have been frustrated with for some time now. I wanted 6 x10 secs exposures ,so when 10 secs was up ,I then stacked. I wasnt going to post such crappy images but I felt I needed to respond to some comments on CN about something I said back in January. Now I feel the need to demonstrate that not all my images are that bad. I would have done the comparison on my C6 hyperstar but cant get the 287 to focus. The other scope i will use on this alt/az mount is the Bresser 102/460 so hope to get some images of the 290 and 287 on that scope next clear night. My other alt/az is the 12" dob which I am sure will produce some pleasing images but that is a big momma and not a grab and go which is the main reason for the 287 purchase. Just to show that not all my images are bad. Here is Centaurus A done over at Snake Valley with Ken more than a year ago in very dark skies rather than full moon and on my C6. It was a stack of 5x16 secs. Paul

Tried the 287 and 290 on the Bresser tonight on the alt/az. I am a bit over posting very bad images . I couldnt get anything decent with the 290 so wont post it. Was happy enough with the 287 with 5 sec exposures. The longest exposure before cigar shaped stars was 20 secs. Stacking did not seem to improve the image much. The image is Centaurus A again 6x 20 secs RT287 This has been very confusing. For my grab and go alt/az scope, the 290 and 224 give good images on the C6 hyperstar but 287 wont focus. On the Bresser, the 287 is ok but 290 and 224 are poor. I cant get anything worthwhile on the lx90 at all and it has been relegated to visual only. Paul

M16 on the C6 with hyperstar and the ZWO 290. The stack was 20x 10 sec alt/az. I dont see much difference after 5 or 6 stacks at this level of quality. Sharpcap handled the rotation pretty well over the 3 minutes and didnt drop any frames. No filter or dark frame extraction. Will give the HEQ5 a go in a couple of weeks when I can lift it out of the shed . cheers Paul cropped

Thanks Ken I posted the M16 then realized you couldnt see the pillars. Hence the cropped addition. It's time to get the HEQ5 out and do some 30 to 40 sec exposures for a change. In the meantime its back to winter weather tomorrow.
cheers Paul
