My 3 kids were home for the weekend and renamed my LX90 8" "Ralph after our Golden Retriever who is no longer with us. My LX90 's behaviour has been very erratic recently just like our dog was. Last Thursday, the LX90 started slewing around and round without any input from me.I had just aligned the LX90 but was using the 6" newt about 10 metres away when I heard this banging and scraping and was horrified when I saw the diagonal with my Mallincam Xtreme banging against the mount. The cables were wrapped about 3 times round the mount and ready to snap. It has done this a couple of times before but I have always been on hand to stop any damage. I happen to have a spare Meade Audiostar hand controller and replaced the old one. So far I havent had any problem with the scope inside within view so presumably it was a faulty hand controller. Ralph the dog used to like sitting around while I slewed the scope from here to there, but when he got excited his tail wagging would become more frenzied and would keep banging against the scope. The more irate I got with him the harder the tail would wag. Usually the session would end in disaster just like last Thursday. Hopefully Ralph the scope will be better behaved in future Ralph the dog and Ralph the scope are both in the centre

My Ed80 = Dolly (Parton) is small, is just the perfect "telescope" shape and with short focal length visually appears to have prominent finderscopes for their size The XX12GT Dob = Granny (Klump) as it's old, big, wide and heavy. The 8" f/5 Newt = Cher as it's slim, pretty light for the length, and an all around great performer - does everything well - visual and EAA. My most used (ahem!) scope.

The 10" remains as Alex and the 8 " is Ralph. It was pretty weird watching Ralph slew on its own . It was a continuous alt then az until the diagonal or camera would crash into the mount base.(Use a diagonal with the mallincam and infinity and no diagonal with the 224). The scope would keep slewing around whilst banging against the mount trying to turn itself upside down. I was on hand the first couple of times it happened and just thought "what the???" and was able to stop any damage. The last time it happened I was 10 metres away with the 6" newt and heard this loud banging scraping sound. It took me a little while to realize where the noise was coming from. Just cant leave Ralph on his own ! The good news is that Ralph seems to be ok with another hand controller. As I have been saying for a while, the SCT's have been causing me a lot of trouble. cheers Paul

. . . As I have been saying for a while, the SCT's have been causing me a lot of trouble. cheers Paul In a whole lifetime of doing astronomy, and a vast collection of telescopes, I have never owned or even used an SCT so I can't comment on them. I did look through one, once, at Astro Camp. It was a Meade 8" SCT and I looked at Uranus for a whole 20 seconds! That's my experience with SCT's

My Celestron 6 sct with hyperstar on an alt/az is a great little grab and go scope. Ken,that was the scope I took over to Snake Valley some time ago and we got pretty good images that night .In my hands, the only decent images I can get on the SCT's is the C6 with hyperstar. The best images I see on CN with SCT's seems to be with hyperstar although Don Rudny seems to get great images no matter what focal reducers he uses. There is no hyperstar for Meade SCT's and I think that is a big disadvantage for Meade. cheers Paul

Yep Paul, I remember you bringing your Meade SCT here. It worked great with the camera. Better than it did in my 120mm f5 refractor.
