I've tried it with a cheap 200mm lens but could not get a sharp focus, it could be down to the lens as it's a old M42 screw on lens

Yep, I have watched all of Alain's videos. That is what I dream of getting through a scope one day. Absolute 'Live' views.

Too true ken,, this is the stuff I want,, views like on the video,, ideally for me would be to do a bit of ap at same time .. get the ed 72 with filter wheel some narrow band filters, (and the dslr in the meantime)and a mono camera and have the zwo 178 and canon lens all mounted on the heq5,,. Kit wise I feel I'm getting closer to achieving what I want,, a multi purpose astronomy rig,, the pc stick mod , wifi mount,, wide field scope.. by time dark skies come around again I should be good to go.

Re lens adaptors for the ASI.
davy ... make sure that you get a fast lens though. That's really important to get like Alains video. He's used f/1.4 ie lets heaps of light through to the sensor. If you stick a normal cheap "kit" lens onto the asi adapter you bought you may be a tad disappointed. IE those lens which come with the camera as a bundle camera and lens ... it'll be f/3.5 or even f/4.5 to f/7.5 lens. IE slow lens not letting much light to the sensor.
When testing my xmas pressie of that f/2.0 rokinon lens, I saw almost the same thing as shown in Alain's video on Canon Liveview. It shocked me because on my f/5 newt Liveview gets maybe 4 or 5 bright stars ... that's all. But liveview through that f/2 lens and it was a whole starfield moving realtime as I moved the scope buttons.
So ... gulp ... Alains' f/1.4 which he used in the video is $AUS560+. I asked the kids and friends to help out with one big Xmas pressie with that Rokinon 135mm f/2.0 cos it was close to $AUS600!!! Gasp!
cheers

ps davy .... your comment narrowband filters and AP ... we are indeed going down the same path davy! PITA driving hours for weather to still turn bad so gradually gathering filters to enable AP at home even with crazy LP. I'm going to stay DSLR OSC as I see so many astrobin shots which are just staggeringly good using OSC DSLR. I cannot justify the cost of CCD + learning whole new bunch of methods. Especially when I see results like this guru in the link ... although this person doesnt use ha, siii, oiii but just dark sites ... want inspiration just look at this blokes images ... www.astrobin.com/users/whwang/pps Mind you once again that bloke has crazy expensive fast f ratio Takahashi scope and flattener reducers and mount and guidescopes ... all top shelf kit.

Really hard to turn the focus rings finely enough and know/see when you're at focus using the liveview or taking lots of shots focusing each time ... hence the mask works a treat. Commercial masks for lens are way too traditional with big lumps of material and not enough gaps for the light to get through whereas the flyscreen ones lets heaps more light through and show diffraction spikes waaaay better on lens.

www.astrobin.com/users/whwang/pps Mind you once again that bloke has crazy expensive fast f ratio Takahashi scope and flattener reducers and mount and guidescopes ... all top shelf kit. and most of his images are taken from Professional Observatories: Siding Spring, Coonabarabran, Mauna Kea, etc. That helps too

LOL Ken ... yes it helps not only taking images from Siding springs, hawaii etc, but also helps being able to afford getting to those places. (sorry I missed hitting the quote button) my bad.

Tried the zwo adapter on the 178 and areas into the body no problem,, fitted a lens 18-55mm fired up sharpcap and can focus no problem,,then the bad news,,can't get the adapter to release the lens,, try as hard as I can the button in the adapter just won't release the lens. I've sent first light optics a email telling them my problem,, hope they have a solution,, or its a knackered adapter and lens I'll have.
Bid on a nifty fifty lens and won it 50mm f1.8 fd lens so if problem with the adapter gets sorted and the eos to fd adapter I've bought as well all marry together I may have a nice camera and fast lens video set up. I'm bidding in a cheap 500mm f1.8 lens,, I'm hoping it will give me a close up video of the moon, to be honest I've no idea what it would show,, ideally looking for around a 16mm fast fd lens but they hold there money even though there an old lens

I saw a really nice f1.4 Zeiss lens today in a camera store while getting some photos printed and thought "ooo, that would be nice" until I read the price. $4,699 and they had a Canon f2 for $5699

Yip I remember,,the Images were stunning but stunned more by the price,, I've kept an eye out on prices but no way could I afford one,,I like getting bargains to much or building up kit on the cheap ,, I started doing video all those years back for 2 reasons 1.. the weather,, doing ap was a chore in the cold and the weather cut short my scope time,, I needed a faster capture method. 2,, the price of ap kit.
I have went round in circles kit wise. But who hasn't that's been doing it a while lol. I find myself back where I started again,, needing a fast set up to compete against the weather but love ap as well, think it's fair to say I have gathered a lot of kit over the years,,and never parted with any of it,, I see guy's selling kit to fund the next great bit of kit all the time,,,, lol I bet they wished they held on to there old Philips spc 900 webcam now given the price they fetch now on eBay.lol.
In it for the long haul,, this has been my longest hobby because it's the most difficult to do,,how can you get bored with it,, because there is no way on earth anyone person has mastered it,,it slowly reveals itself a small bit at a time,,the kit constantly changes now as does capture techniques,, I'm still as intrigued now as I first started,, more relaxed about it ,but I've never been one to rush out and do it all,,,think this is how I've lasted so long doing it,, I've no even started deep sky objects yet,, I like looking at the moon,, could not even name a fraction if it,, I just like looking at it,, seen Jupiter a couple if times, Orion nebula I've took a poor image of,, never saw Saturn,, as sir Patrick Moore said you could spend a lifetime just looking at the moon, I do want some nice pictures soon,,I'm going to paint my hall black,, carol had added silver dust sprinkles to grey paint and done three walls and looks fantastic,, so I'm going for the skywatcher black diamond effect and want to have a lot of my capture images on the wall,, that's my goal,, lol,, order the straight jacket lol.
