Hi Howie That's awesome and would love to see things first hand! I am sadly still very new and have only basic knowledge but I guess we all to start somewhere! If you're cool I would love to organize something and just let me know. I do admit I love dobs...but I have Scottish parents and therefore like bang for the buck perhaps? However I am more than prepared to take good advice when needed and this may sound blasphemous but doing hours of visual to just a see a grey smudge did admittedly get frustrating at times but if EAA/VA can provide a deeper window into the universe then I am definitely keen! I don't expect miracles but from the videos I have seen from members on this forum I am more than interested! (Just in the process of getting some more funds together but that won't take long and gives me time for research and proper thought into what I need). I will check out the NSN and subscribe to that FB page of the gentleman in NZ. Yes I look into the EQ mounts and simply put effort into getting use to using them! I am trying to avoid the temptation of a nice 9.25 SCT scope that I can get for about $1800 that has GOTO but apparently the focal length causes issues as it is seriously slow. Okay drop me a line of a time you were thinking of going somewhere and I can meet you there as I don't need to cause you too much trouble, or I can come to your place or somewhere neutral! Another scope I like the look of are the Explore Scientific AR152, but by the time you put a mount on them,,,etc it gets too expensive. I do like the idea of a nice 10" newt on an EQ mount (despite the naysayers, but again I can take good advice!!). Looks like my expensive Gypsy Jazz handmade guitar is definitely up for sale!! lol!! Regards Andrew H Came to the right forum,, Scottish heritage members get front row seats in here,,, hard to believe ,,but I'm Scottish as well,,😂

Regards Andrew H BLUE answer: AVOID! AVOID! RED answer: There you go thinking in terms of Large aperture again which in turn gives you a looong focal length. Stick with 8 inch (200mm) as a maximum because: 1. You don't need large aperture with these cameras. 2. 800mm is almost at the point of being too long so use it as a maximum Focal Length guide. I usually suggest 700mm as a Max for simplicity, better FOV, sharper stars, shorter exposures etc., but 800 is OK. Seriously try avoid going longer.

Hi Ken
LOL...that cracked me up..."There you go thinking long (and big) again!! LOL...you can tell I can from the big dob camp! I recently did have an 18" Dob but I got sick of getting up step ladders late at night and nearly fell off several times! Okay, I finally get the point now and if I am to do V.A I need a new mindset! Seriously though, it's a hard one to get rid of but now seeing what I can get on my budget! You have made some great suggestions and I will be looking into them carefully. Then the camera!!
Cheers Andrew H!!

Simply beautiful. Bizarre styling with the wide body and small soundhole Yes it is a special design used by certain musicians (popularized by Django Reinhardt in the 1930-40s) that projects clear tone and are brilliant instruments! This one is an exceptionally made example! Thanks for the feedback!

Lovely guitar Andrew. It's always a bit hard to let some things go.
Reminds me of my beautiful hand made 1970's De Dimaggio Spanish guitar I had. I sold it to a little girl who was very serious about guitar. I sold it to her for quarter of what it was worth on the condition that she must stick with her guitar playing.
Now I only have a cheapie Acoustic, a cheapie 12 string, a Fender Stratocaster, a Fender Partscaster, a collectable Torch Stratocaster and an old little Stella Classical.

Yes guitars rarely get what you paid for them, and really I am thinking I should keep this as it is a wonderful instrument that once I sell I will most likely never be able to afford again (and possibly regret)! I too love Strats although I play a Ibanez George Bensen or a Tele....as I am more into jazzy stuff! Anyway have a good one chief! Regards Andrew H

Guitar thread!!
Love a good tele/partscaster. I've got a grey/black sunburst tele which I used in my punk/mod days. Recently i put in some Bill Lawrence keystone pickups which makes it way better. Also an old Maton rickenbacher copy. A 1960s Hofner President. And a cheapo admira flamenco guitar - which I've spent the last 20 years trying to figure out how to play. Mind you that's gotta be much easier than video astro with a huge dob or sct!!

Hi Ken! Good points and I now know that I will not be using a dob for V.A!! I am surprised that there are not more people doing V.A?? Is it that new? The benefits seem to be there and be able to see things that the naked eye can't is definitely one of them...although there are constraints. Okay well I am very grateful for the advice and will start the look around for a scope as I got rid of a lot of gear! Always fun to search! I can get hold of a Celestron 9.25" XLT (CST) scope but I will review your advice on this and the long focal length... Just a question if I can, now that you are into V.A would you ever go back to just visual? Does V.A spoil you a bit? LOL...anyway,,,onto scope searching and I if you're cool, I will put up scope suggestions I find for advice!! Regards Andrew H Hi Andrew, I still do visual, sometimes the break in the clouds is simply not big enough to open up the Obsy and boot up the PC & mount, so I use binoculars. I still have eyepieces and do some visual through my main telescope, and I have a SW ST80 for holidays. Yes the VA does spoil you as in my case I can sit where it's warm. The obsy has made VA and stargazing very easy. When the meteor showers are on I will sit with my wife in the telescope room and watch, sheltered from the wind. Or use the walls to support the binoculars. I don't do high tech stargazing all the time.

I haven't had a chance to comment further as I am just pending new funds to come in and most likely I will get something like the recommended Skywatcher ED80 or 200mm and under. I have been really busy in the last 2 weeks hence my absence but starting to wonder about what camera I should start with....although the money hasn't come in yet!! Nice to daydream!

If you already had a dob, I'd say try it but I wouldn't buy one just for use with EAA. Like Ken said, bigger isn't necessarily better. A longer focal length will require better tracking. I much prefer my Orion ED80T-CF (f/5.9) even over my 8" Newtonian (f/5). It's easier to carry and less susceptible to wind. It's also less demanding on the mount. Here are some images which show the difference in the object size between the two. Same camera (Ultrastar C): M101 ED80T-CF (6x60s) (unguided) M101 Orion Skyview Pro 8" (6x120s) This one was guided.
