Went back to pipe band three weeks ago , went back as a tutor but knew I would need to fill a tenor drummer position in the band as it had none on the books at present time,, Spoke with leading drummer and he was ok me coming back,,lol..don't think he had much of a choice as band was depleted drum corps wise. So I declined the offer to play with the band after I had went through a practice session without drums,so I could listen and watch.. pretty confident I'm not far off the standard required to play. Got word through the week that I have two pupils to teach and get to competition standard,, found out tonight I've two weeks to do it in .๐ญ Why do I do this to myself

Hope.. the drummers haven't turned up at the band over last two Wednesdays,, going to the indoor competition tomorrow but I won't be playing,, last week I had to stand in for the bass drummer,, wasn't what I wanted to do,,but tried to help out,,,was off the tempo so the leading drummer said to me,,, told him first time on a drum in a year so if I'm a bit off put someone else on it... aah that's right you don't have anybody,,, gas at a peep ๐,, this week i practised without a drum and would not put on a drum,, bass drummer was back from holiday so that saved a moan..lead drummer is a crabbit git and a lot of folk give him a wide berth,, back stabbed me about 8yrs ago,, brought in one of his side drummers brother for last competition of the season,,we only needed to get 1 point and we would be champions of champions in grade 4b,told me to take a drum that could not be played and pretend to play it,, yip that was going to happen spend my money traveling and paying for a ferry ect to pretend,, the told to stick it,, so when I joined the band again and he was in charge he thought he would crack a joke about it,,, I laughed and shouted out that next time I would kick his F in head in.. ๐ ah the sound of silence...lol

The advice is - don't volunteer for anything, well you find out when you do! When do we listen to advice.... including me! When do we read instructions except when it doesn't work. Davy has an urge to play in a band, when do any of us learn our lessons, even when we were at school! We are destined to learn the hard way, no matter what. Could be worse we could have an urge to play the bagpipes.......

Lol, been out today listening to the bands in the Coatbridge indoor competition, five bands competing in the group my band is in. Our band was half the size of the others ,we only had a bass and two side drummers, we came fourth and were in the prizes. It was a good indication to where we are in relation to other bands,. If you don't know what's wrong you can't fix it is my motto. Being on the sidelines today, helped the band as I was asked to assess the playing of the drum corp, but it's a job for Solomon, I may know of problems at the practice before competing but you have to assess if you make a statement about flaws...will you make things worse on occasions I've seen this happen.. Changed the bass drummers playing position as I wasn't happy with the resonance from the drum,, I had spoke to the bass drummer about the tone and resonance of the drum five weeks ago and was bombed out,,, after today the pipe major asked my options and now will get it addressed, even bass drummer listening now... Looks like I have a voice again in drum corp... I like to use technology in assisting me in tutoring and video recorded the bands playing,, so when the pipe major and leading drummer were discussing the performance ,, I gave them the recording to watch... Smiling I said,, can't fix it if you can't see what's wrong,,,, Wednesday practice should be good ๐

Is it true that bag pipes are just a cat in tartan bag and you bite its tail?

Davy
I like the pipes. Spent most of my adult life playing in military/concert bands (including the Australian Army Reserve).
We often ended up at the same jobs with the pipe bands - lots of fun....

Hi esk,, I've been in a few band's and end up leaving because of internal politics,,, just the way I am,, if I see something not right I take the moral high ground,, but this time I'm not getting involved in any of it,, just doing what I want now,, I've went back as a bass section, primarilyโ a tenor drum tutor,, I don't wish to play in competitionsโ but will stand in for a tenor drummer when we finally get some.
I'm looking to up the level I taught at,, I started learner's right up to playing with the band. But I want to teach them and myself to a higher grade than previously and I can't do that if I need to play gigs, competition'sโ and play stand in bass drummer,, probably put a few faces out of joint as I done all this before and done there website.
Of course I'm probably going to be as busy but this time I call the shots.. pipe major had me in control of bass section before but I was never recognised for it,, I told him let me run with changing things or get in a tutor as I could not change without band recognition,,a tenor tutor was brought in and paid and it turns out I was a better tutor and cheaper.free ๐. so now it's in my favour ,I can push on. My goal is to get my grandson down in the next couple of years and teach him and if he likes great...

Is it true that bag pipes are just a cat in tartan bag and you bite its tail? Bagpipes are fine, it's the Haggis that is not so attractive. My missus told one of my mates son how to play Bagpipes, hold Grandma's cat under you arm and squeeze it's tail! The Bagpipes will put fear into anyone without blue & white face paint! Seriously though I have had many trips to Scotland and all good. I have the greatest of respect to all the Scottish people who make a living from the land and on the Scottish Islands.

Have you tried haggis Harry,, the first time I tried it was when I was 17 and it was a Burns supper,, I was sat down to a plate of mashed potatoes , haggis and mashed turnip,,, it was howling ,, I wasn't a fan of mashed potatoes,, I always ate chips,,, mashed turnip gave me the boak and the haggis I would just give a miss,,, years later I was hungry after the usual too many lagers and it's all the local chip shop had left,,, starving and pissed I gave it a go ,, I now love deep fried haggis in batter... Moral of the story first time you try it ,,,your better pissed ๐ but it's better the more you try it ๐

I get the impression that Haggis like any other food is best eaten fresh and close to where it's made. A bit like Guinness is not so good the further away from Ireland you are. Deeps fried Haggis in batter sounds more promising.
