Well that's the work started,, with it being bonfire night, wood is a sought after commodity,,so no better time than now to get the aviary pulled down and taken away,, timing is lousy as per my luck, still suffering with the cold and a cracked rib,,,and it is killing me,, another bad point ,,I built this aviary to last ( Clyde built) is the expression used in Scotland when you want something to last, bit of a rest just now, been at an hour so far and of course doing it on my lonesome..the joys

Well they say things get worse, before they get better, the garden was carols domain but with her health going down hill so is the state of the garden,,needs a massive clear out,she is getting a large shed put in the garden but she is a bloomin hoarder nothing gets chucked out,, few arguments over the years over that issue,,and of course everything is now in a rush to clear garden for her she'd,,but of course she has building work getting done, plastic fascia on front and back if building getting removed, insulation and roughcasting getting done ,,so all the stuff round the walls ,is now in middle of garden and it's a fight to get stuff done,,I'm so fed up with this already.

Just throw it all out and build your observatory in the middle of the yard davy. That should go over well

That's the flight and shed pulled down, just the floor to come up ,,I'm totally knackered and not feeling too good,, ribs are hurting like hell, nose running like a river, sweating buckets,,I'm right in the crap if it doesn't get shifted for a bonfire tonight, will need to bring it all back into garden and chop it up to take to amenities tip.

Job done,, shed and flight is now disposed of,, I stacked all the wood outside the garden to go on a bonfire tonight,,, local police turned up , what am I doing,, obviously not detective grade,, I said dismantling an aviary,, what are you doing with the wood,,, mmmm I thought let's have some fun,, I said not trying to be funny,,but it's bonfire night and the sheds wood.. So it's going on a bonfire.. I'm led to believe,,if it's left here ,,it won't be there tomorrow.
I said let's cut out the carry on and cut to chase
What do you want to do with the wood,,
They didn't want it going on a bonfire and it can go on a council lorry,,
I said if it's free ,,you can do what you want with it,,
Lorry got loaded, and the police woman said,,since we've cleared it away,,for free ,,tell us where the bonfire is..
Lol ,,, not a chance But if I see you at it,, I'll give you a wave 😂

LOL! Weird conversation with Police. They are the local police and they don't know where the Bonfire is? Not very socially informed are they! Good that you got it all done and taken away. Now build that observatory LOL!

The pink panther came to mind,, they are shutting down all bonfires in the area,, police and council lorries are lifting all the wood left out for "" illegal bonfire's "" bless them, god loves a tried... were a bit miffed when I wouldn't tell Them,, I near pissed myself laughing...let the kids have fun,, locals have about £500 worth of fireworks bought already and they have all the wood stored in vans,,ready to build the bonfire as soon as it goes dark,, and a few vans have mysteriously broken down on the access road .lol.. great fun

Lol,, the bonfire was built in jig time with van loads of wood,, was a great bonfire and the firework display was brilliant.well organised by the nameless lol,, Strathclyde fire brigade came and they spoke with the guys and gave it the thumbs up.. even gave a blast in the two tones with cherries n berries lit up,, great bit of community spirit and common sense prevailed..great night out.

So stage one complete, shed removed, its given me more things to think about. Few ideas kicking around in my head.
Weather is the big factor, I've decided it's just too cold to go with a roll off roof observatory,so given the shed style I will get,,metal with double doors,, it will be a concrete base with a rubber floor for insulation, the shed needs a decent security system, thinking along the line of three stage system,, stage one.. shock sensor to doors with siren armed/disarmed by external key switch Stage 2... motion sensors to an alarm system with twin sirens and strobes. Stage 3... CCTV camera external. The wiring will be covered with loft insulation and be lined with wood. Electrical supply will then be put in and run my kit. Equipment wise I'm looking at putting the heq5 on a wheeled platform to move out of the shed, the shed will be a warm room housing a computer, four channel CCTV DVR, weather station.. and a heater 😂

Pity to go that way Davy as that will mean you will still have to set up each time you wheel the Mount out. It would be so much better to never have to move your mount. That way it remains always set up and ready to use.
Gotta be a simple way to make the shed move away. A sort of smaller version of what we did.

As an owner of a Roll off obsy the sides of the obsy viewing room give you some shelter from the wind when you are at the scope. I found my legs always got cold first. I have a separate warm room so I'm usually in the warm anyway. Metal sheds tend to attract cold. There is no substitute for very strong locks, alarms are OK, but are usually ignored by neighbours. Wiring - best to have access in case of rodent damage.

Hi harry/ken,, Scotland hitting Baltic weather just now,, shed wise via space I'm really struggling , my max size I think would be 8x6 I had a 6x4 originally and about the same with the aviary flight,, I'm boxed in six foot fence on two sides and a green house on third on the one free side I have the path going to rear gate. I have max of three feet width including of path, 6x4 shed too small, been there before and was useless, roll off shed blocks my best view, the big one is the cold, I walk by someone with a cold I catch it and it then leads to unpaid days off,, so a warm environment is essential I could go remote viewing and a roll off roof,, but I kinda like the me time in a man cave, piece and quiet time ,no distractions.once the garden is cleared and I have a concrete bass down will have better idea. ,,Harry. The shed being metal will draw condensation but it's something I need to overcome, the last shed made of wood lasted four years,, metal shed has a 12yr, I'm hoping the insulation will help,, last shed was 5 degrees warmer internal to external temp wise,i never insulated the roof this time it will,, few tricks up the sleeves to try.

Yes Davy, I know how small a 6'x4' shed is. My old roll-of-roof Observatory was 4'x4' and only 4' high and was the smallest roll-off-roof observatory in the world at the time LOL!!! It was CRAMPED in there! 6'x6' is the smallest you can go and have room to move. 6'x8' will allow for a small 3'x6' closed in area to keep warm. the remaining 5'x6' is plenty of room for the scope. Here's my old 4'x4' obs with my son opening it (he was 9 y.o at the time) and here I am in it:
This pic shows how small it was:
This pic shows how I set up my whole control room underneath the 4x4 roll-off roof (and it all fit)

davy, Theres a bunch of designs in this pdf in the link below ... but the one which I found interesting within this link/pdf is the small 'outhouse-style' one which shows the scope on a pier and the small 'outhouse' rolls in its entirety away from the pier. On the 5th page. Perhaps incorporate that 'bit' on the end of a normal shed like the sketch I attached? Link to pdf various obs ... This link maybe should go into a 'sticky' for others to find? www.marsastro.org/presentations/MARS_Home-Observatory.pdf

Also, I haven't been able to find the webpage again, but I did read a thread somewhere sometime where the guy went up into his roof cavity area in his house, and (I presume with a builder. LOL?) cut out a segment of the peak so making that peak bit movable/sliding. He stuck his scope fixed up there in the roof cavity with one of those drop-down ladders into his hallway to gain access. The space wasnt big enough for him to actually setup all his gear so all that was downstairs in a room and he remotely operated his scope up in the ceiling space from downstairs in the warmth of the house.

Only cold rain down here in the East Midlands, but snow/sleet possible, by morning, currently 4°C.
