Nah, too late to organise and register, and weather is going to be crap anyway If it clears up I'll still probably try a broadcast anyway. I have to give this new Observatory 'first light'

Broadcasting ....
Be interested to see how you go Ken. I've tried several times and with just me on, the chat window gets flooded with Broadcaster has disconnected messages every few seconds, even on the lowest bandwidth slider setting (full to the left). Been told the 2Mbps upload speed I have at my place is too low a number for the broadcast tool. I've just sent Joe an email asking how to set it up for low upload speed.
I hope it gets sorted ... anyway watched out for your broadcast but didnt see you on. Maybe you were my one guest I saw on mine! LOL
cheers

It was Howie, Ken. Its not the pc/lan/router etc which is the problem, Ken. The guys who have been broadcasting heaps (who do also still occaisionally get "Broadcaster has disconnected") all reckon it is the upload speed which determines the connections problems, plus how many folk are connected to the broadcast watching and using the audio all at the same time. They say 2 Mbps upload speed is way too low. So, what's your upload speed Ken? I'm on Telstra cable and my ping and download speed is fine (11ms and 110Mbps), but my upload speed (which is what the NSN broadcast tool uses to send your video capture and your audio up to the web) is barely 0.5 to 1.6 Mbps. Using the Windows resource monitor I see the NSN broadcast tool regularly over 0.6 Mbps even with the bandwidth slider way over to the left to use minimum upload bandwidth, and with "Normal" refresh set (not the higher live solar/lunar setting), and with my audio turned off. If I turn on my audio I see heaps of time over 0.8 to 1.8Mbps with just me and one other in the broadcast using audio. cheers Howie

Three of us went to coats observatory in Paisley,me ,Carol and uncle John,,took a bit to find ,but what a cracking building, late 1800's .this building must have cost a packet of cash to build back then,, inside it was a mixture of green glaze tiles and painted walls to original spec I would say and well preserved, few flights of stairs and on to a winding spiral walkway till you get to a room below the observatory, then a very narrow spiral staircase to observatory. Managed to get a view of the moon,,I thought with the size of the scope it would have been jaw dropping but to tell the truth I've seen better with my scopes ,but it's impressive built just before 1900's it would have been impressive, manual telescope no clock drive like the one at Stirling observatory but a great observatory,we heard they only get about. six nights a season due to the weather,,that's worse than me lol. Out into the courtyard a Meade lx 8" scope was set up but the clouds had rolled in and we were sitting out for a while to no joy, they had a planetarium show but it was away back up flights of stairs and it was to much for carols legs,,she done really well to get to the observatory but she paid a heavy price her legs were hurting her bad all night poor lass never got any sleep wae the pain.. overall wasn't well organised or presented what we did see,and this was definitely a time when video astronomy would have been a success, gave me guidance for doing my first outing with my new astronomy club,,no way can visual astronomy beat video astronomy at club events this I'm sure about,,the amount of wasted night sky time messing around with scopes,, nope video is way to go.in my view

I noticed that my Download speed is LESS than my upload speed which is really weird because I usually get between 25Mbps and 35Mbps download speed. So I checked it on another test site and got the same results! Terrible download but good upload. I will be calling NBN tomorrow to find out why my download speed has gone on holidays. I watched Tom's broadcast today and you would guess the download speed was high because the Video and all Audio still came through fantastic. Here's my strange results from 2 different test sites:

Thanks Ken,
Yes, Your 4Mbps upload speed via the NBN network is why you didn't have a problem with your NSN broadcast tests. You are lucky to be on the NBN already mate! Steve Loganskies and I, both in Brissie in areas not on NBN, are barely averaging 1Mbps and constantly get Broadcaster Disconnect messages. I called Telstra and no plans for NBN in our area at the moment. So stuck being unable to broadcast.
On pushing the Telstra call center re the stupidity of upload speeds being unchanged for 8 years or so they said the business plan can get up to 2Mbps! For 7 times the cost of my current plan, and they cannot guarantee the 2Mbps ... its only "up to" 2Mbps! ROFL!
When I pushed some more, they put me onto their wireless mob. For $150 per month I can get a wireless 4G modem on a plan which only gets me 50Gb combined upload and download per month! But the upload speed is between minimum 2Mbps and 10Mbps. Whirlpool forum users are mixed on their posts ... some getting exactly 2.00 Mbps upload and never anything better, and then there are some reporting 4Mbps all the way to the 10Mbps. Download speeds are reportedly ok at 30 Mbps to 110Mbps. Checking my current plans last few months usages, I am averaging barely 30Gb per month since my kids moved out (lol, before they moved we almost blew the 500Gb per month limits!). So the 50Gb limit would allow me 20 Gb per month of broadcasting. If the upload bandwidth averaged 2 Mbps (7Gb per hour approx) that gives me barely 3 hours per month of broadcasting! For $150 a month! They are kidding ... !!!
Another option is to buy the wifi modem outright ($264) and buy prepaid 4G cards which are 5Gb for $50 or the fantastic saving (according to Malaysian "Bob" who was on the callcentre phoneline) of buying the biggest 16Gb prepaid plan for $140!!! LOL. So the cost would be about $70 for one 2 hour broadcast per month!!
Further ROFL!!!
Optus has 50Gb sims on prepaid for $70 a month! But Optus coverage is pityful in Qld compared to Telstra's and I know from previous experience when I was on Optus home ADSL if there is a problem it takes twice the time for them to fix it as when on Telstra contract. Sigh!
Guess me and Steve just have to wait for the NBN to eventually rollout in our areas. Maybe our local member knows, as the NBN site and Malaysian "Bob" said there was absolutely no roll out date for us!
cheers

Howie, we have had NBN for 3 years. Here in the Rural areas of Victoria were first in line. City and suburban people are still waiting. Liberal party stuffed it up big time.

The observatory was an amazing building, the clouds were the drawback but a bit more of a talk about the scope ect may have made it more enjoyable, still got to see a very nice observatory.

Yes. Absolutely correct Ken. I'm in a safe liberal seat in Sydney (for my sins) and no immediate plans for nbn in our area. Suppose they don't have to buy our vote. Edit: sorry i shouldn't get political ... Howie, we have had NBN for 3 years. Here in the Rural areas of Victoria were first in line. City and suburban people are still waiting. Liberal party stuffed it up big time.
