I subscribe to the UK AstronomyShed videos and the guy has posted up this GoPro type camera called the ISAW Edge 4k. In the video he says it is unlike the GoPro in that you can vary the ISO and exposure times? He also says he is learning how to use it and then go try out some wide field astro work. I don't know anything about the GoPro nor this Isaw Edge. Has anyone tried one?
Vid link below ... he says time-lapse is really easy to do and the low light capability seems quite good. Its shown in the vid ....

Wow, that looks great Howie.
It's night view is better than any All-Sky cam I have ever seen.
At $259 Aussie dollars it is good value. It should do planets too in HD.

I'm glad to see AstronomyShed back at it... he took a break for a while. I have found many of his videos very helpful!

looks good for a all sky cam with the time lapse feature, don't think it will be much use for anything else except for a dash cam

Yeah Rick, I have also got a lot of good tips from his video's. Yes Ken and Johnno, I have seen a local astro club guy doing timelapse with his go pro and also some software + DSLR combo. And thought I like that timelapse stuff I could get into that! From the examples I have seen the local blokes do, his GoPro did not have the color and dynamic range of the DSLR timelapses he took. The GoPro color is good until you see it beside a DSLR color which looks more 'vivid/HDR'. But that astronomyshed vid of day going into night shot on the Isaw looked every bit as good as the DSLR timelapses I have seen. So yes, for around $AUS250 looks pretty sweet. Never thought about it as an AllSky camera! Good point, with its variable ISO it could be good at that too! Re planets ... when you've finished with your obs build Ken, you can have a go at converting the Isaw to attach to an eyepiece cheers

Howie,
I have a Go Pro 3 - Black, which is supposed to have a better low-lux response, but I have found it utterly lacking for any Astronomy or dark application.
I have not done an IR conversion to remove the IR block in front of the sensor, but honestly I dont think that would help at all.

Thanks Rick. It was more the timelapse stuff covering twilight into (hopefully) seeing the Milky Way pass overhead. But, like you've found with your GoPro, I wondered if there was anything I could do with kit I already owned and that I know has good sensitivity. I have found a bit of software (free) which will do it using my trusty ol' Canon. So I am going to give that a go. They are predicting cloud and chance of rain on Saturday so I am going to give it a go then ... hopefully a nice sunset through some cloud going into darkness. Bit ambitious for a first go ... but what the heck, I'm game!!!! Few sundowners out the back with the camera clicking away. Sounds good to me!!
cheers

Tonight is looking good for me.
With the Evolution 9.25, I hope to get first shots of Saturn of the year, some more Jupiter and Mars and maybe some moon. Will probably just stick with the SSI camera and wont do much with DSOs unless they are small & bright.
I hope to get out my "new bit o' kit" for my secret project and do some testing and documenting so I can write it up here.
But best laid plans...
