Time Lapse Video from NASA of the assembly process. Now that's what I call one heck of a primary mirror!

Here are the specs: - Aperture: 6,500mm (6.5m or 21ft) - Focal length: 131,400mm (131.4m or 431ft) - F/ratio: 20.2
Of course, they are going after red to infrared with this scope, so they'll have specialized cameras and spectrometers.
I'm very excited about this one - I think the number of known galaxies will go through the roof. I think its also possible that we find some brown dwarf stars and planets (maybe even the dreaded Nibiru!)

Hi folks,
That Webb is one crazy item. The Science channel had a full hour on telescopes last night which included Webb and Hubble. One of the Hubble guys said "lets just point this at a hole in the sky for 10 days and see what we get." A few folks scoffed at him, but they gave it a go......Amazing...thousands more galaxy's.. The TV screen was full of what I thought were stars, but no, only two stars in the whole group the rest galaxy's. Hard to fathom almost.
little side note..Still waiting on my APU-1(going on 5 months), finally just went and bought a Mallincam DSc and a .5 reducer, and of course the post delivered rain and snow with it, no charge!! Looking forward to Spring, cabin fever is rearing its ugly head here in Wisconsin!

Chuck,
I saw that show last night too! I thought it was very good!
I'm glad you went ahead and got a camera so you can get out there once the weather cooperates. I've got a DSm, so if you need any help, feel free to ask!

Yeah, that picture of the dark area in the sky which turned out to be home to thousands of galaxies, was pretty spectacular! Wonder if they'll do the same thing again with the James Webb - find a patch which Hubble thinks is pretty clear and point Webb at it? A friend of mine believes its all much bigger than we think and what we can currently see is just the tip of the iceberg (so to speak). Just that we'll never see how big it is here on Earth, as the light from even further is going to take even longer to get to us. Chuck ... darn ... wish I'd known you were looking to buy a DSc, I'd have offered you mine. Your US dollar buys heaps of our Aussie at the moment so woulda been a good deal for you. Being uncooled it struggles here in Oz. Actually thought of getting a peltier cooler, heatsink and mag bearing silent pc fans and DIY'ing a cooler ... but haven't got the patience to that diy stuff anymore. I just want stuff which works right from the get go Anyhooo, hope you have fun with it. Howie_Oz

I agree with your friend, Howie. Because this telescope will be so sensitive in the infrared, I believe it will discover 10s of thousands of galaxies whose redshifts have exceeded the visible red and near infrared (so invisible to Hubble). The size and age of our Universe will go way up... The hypothesis of Cosmic Inflation may be DOA.

Yep Davy it is un-acceptable as my initial communication with the company stated a 4-5 week delivery. I won't comment further as I do not want to start a He Said/She said war and that turns into vendor bashing...If anyone wants the gory details just PM me.
Understand about good deals passing us by Howie!!! Regarding the heat problem down there and the DSm; I wonder if one could find an acceptable size heat sink and along with some DC-340 heat sink compound strap it to the DSm? Might be just enough to get you by.
Rick:Thanks for the offer of help, ya never know. So far I have only been able to test it in the house out a window due to snow and cold. I think my trouble might be learning integration times and exposure and general software use. Also Rick, an off topic item...Did you ever delve into Hamradio? I have been at it for about 62 years, super hobby and just like astronomy its great if you can be in the country.

No matter how lousy a company is, we won't allow them to be bashed in this Forum. We are bash-free There's already enough places around the net that bash. We have managed to keep this Forum free from any form of Vendor bashing or product bashing for the last couple of years we have been running, and in these days and times that is a remarkable achievement. That is mainly due to very level-headed members who are more than likely tired of the bashing found elsewhere. The best way to deal with a company that doesn't come up to expectations is to never post their name or anything about them. Why give Google search bots more sources of their name to add to Google Search. It's like the old saying "out of sight, out of mind"

Chuck, yes I still am! I started studying for my license but then I purchased an SDRPlay and messed about with ADSB and watching planes, so I got distracted haha! I need to get back to studying!
