Thanks davy. Starvis looks promising for us. Pregius is just SuperMegapixel technology so no matter how far you zoom in it doesn't pixelate. Well, to a point. It will obviously pixelate eventually But the Starvis will be good with its low light capability. It's another one of those products that we won't know how well it works for us until someone tries it.

I have the ZWO 178C but up to now only used it on the Quark, people have said it's no good for DSO's due to the small pixels but there is some excellent photo's on their forum but have been processed afterward.

Going by the sony advert for it it looks good in low light and does exposure to 20 seconds,,on par with pd1,ln300,the zwo forum says it now does binning 3x3 and 4x4 you would think it would be the bees knees

I've just done a little test between the 178c and the inova with the ◾Aptina MT9M034 1/3″ Gain on the iNova goes up to 1000, gain on the 178mc goes up to 512 Inova cam @ 30 seconds and gain @ default 210 ZWO 178mc @ 60 seconds and gain @ default 211 ZWO @ 60 seconds and gain halfway @ 260 gain ZWO @ 60 seconds and gain 3/4 or 370 gain Finally iNova @ 30 seconds and gain halfway 510 gain

Big difference John! The Inova at default 210 is worse than the ZWO at twice the exposure and lots more gain!

Yes Ken, just shows how far these sensors have come along. Its by no means a scientific test just covered the sensor and let the camera run for 5 minutes on each test

Davy you could be right about the 1000 sec exposure. The software that comes with the camera goes up to 1024 seconds which is about 15 minutes, but in sharpcap if I move the slider all the way over it goes to 2000 seconds, 30 minutes. Either way the most I'll be doing is 60 seconds on the Alt Z mount

Can we try the zwo on a DSO at some time john,,I like this camera,if it's as good as I think it will be,its a nice affordable camera, the lodestar at £100 more is more what I was after, but a secondhand zwo is an option

Was reading posts on can imaging section and they are using the cooled version, looks like it will be a decent camera for video,OK it has small pixels to capture photons but on a fast scope it will be OK,you can see some noise in there darks when stretched and amp glow and banding on long exposure a/p

Yes Davy, it was just plonked on top of the computer desk at room temp of 21 C. with lens cap on. Quite a few people are using the ZWO 224mc for EAA which seems more suited.
been hoping for a clear night to try it out, it's fairly clear tonight but only just got in and I'm knackered.
I don't think a 1.25 reducer can handle it due to the sensor size I know I get vignetting when I use it on the Quark with a reducer

Great to see another ZWO ASI224 fanboy ... I posted this the other day over on another thread on 1/2" sensors and cut and paste in this thread ... there's a linke to Don Boy's great shots using the ASI224 and a link to a CN thread in which a guy tells all the techo spec details as to why its good and why its specifically good for AltAz ... ie so sensitive you need to change the way you use it and do short exp and lots of them rather than long. Although as per Dons shots he goes longer and gets great results. Here's that post anyway .... " There's quite a few folk (I'm one) doing EAA with the ASI224 though. I prefer using DSLR's for EAA. But the ASI224 is also a keeper. Don Lulejian (regular broadcaster on the old NSN) got me hooked with his ASI224 broadcasts. Not Sammy-cheap prices, but the uncooled 224 are quite reasonable. It is so sensitive with such large dynamic range that you can easily use it with lots of very short exposures. So you can get away with uncooled. Here's a good link below. Heaps of photos in the thread. You'll see the guy uses 5 sec exposures on an AltAz mount. Pretty good for that! Don Lulejian tends to up the exp time to 30 secs and use 5 stacked. In the thread theres a bit of a debate which is best - shorter or longer. I heard Don say in one of his broadcasts he thinks the 224 might be better than the US$1000 Infinity, but harder to use cos you need 3 bits of software to run it. But thats changed with the release of SharpCap 2.7 which does de-rotational stacking and has a good color adj histo. I just downloaded that release but unfortunately, as usual ... bad weather here since I downloaded it!. I will post up results when clear skies finally happen here. Just remember when you read the thread that you dont wait the full 200 secs (say) to see the image ... you see an image within 5 secs, then it just get better and better as time progresses. He just decided to (in the end) stop it at 40 x 5s stack. www.cloudynights.com/topic/508613-new-camera-%E2%80%93-eaa-with-zwo-asi224-with-nexstar-8se/and here's Don's screen grabs from his broadcasts ... www.flickr.com/photos/23705399@N04/sets/72157656927157919cheers. Howie ps Have used (and have really have missed the opportunity to sell now) ... Mallincam VSS+, Micro EX (prob will keep as its a great B&W finder!), DSc (ahem ... let me hold my tongue on that one), two Canons (one modded), Nikon (unmodded) and even a modded webcam! "

Tried again last night hoping for clear weather to try the new SharpCap 2.7 with the ZWO 224 ... photo shows the cloud cover which only got worse! Sigh ... ! Poor guy who'd setup his Dob was really hopeful but at 9pm it started raining. Been so bad lately it was lucky for him I still had a couple of plastic sheets in the car to throw over his kit. Howie

Hi Howie,,think ver 2.8 out now in sharpcap,I've read the posts don put up and agree with his method,, after reading posts in the imaging section, start getting banding and amp glow on long exposures and noise aparant when image is stretched.
