I purchased a new telescope, a Sky-Watcher BK120ED, and a new camera, a ZWO ASI120MC-S. I'm not sure how to set up the optical train to see various targets, such as planets, moon and DSO. Do I need a reducer/corrector, barlow, etc and how would they line up in the optical train for each type of object viewed? The scope will be mounted on an AVX mount and used in a LP area. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Brian, looking for the full package lunar/planets & DSO,all achievable all you need to do is add to what you have..I have the sw ed80 and I found I had back focas probs when I added a camera to the scope, I had to add an 80mm extension tube to achieve focus, best bit of equipment I got was a flip mirror add a 6mm lens to it,saves a lot of hassle..for large DSO I would go for the sw 0.85 reducer flatner for planets a Barlow or two will be needed.hope this helps

Thanks Davy Do you use the flip mirror (1.25"?) with all types of targets? When do I need to insert the reducer? Just with DSOs?

Brian,
I also use a flip mirror and have it in line all the time with my ED80, it just helps when I'm doing my alignments plus I don't need to have a extension tube. When done with the alignment I just flip the mirror up and the camera is ready for action.
As for using a reducer it's up to you on how you want your FOV. If you can't get all the object in the FOV you use a reducer plus it shortens your exposure time.

Im the same as john..flip mirror on all the time..lot easier to set up..focus wise.focal tube was used before I got flip mirror ,still use it for astrophotography.the sw reducer not only gives a wider field of view it improves your optics by flattening out your lens and makes your scope faster..

Next purchase is a flip mirror. I only see 1.25' ones available, no 2" ones. I guess the adapter before or after the flip mirror would give the same result anyways.
Thank you

I believe a 2" to 1.25" adapter will come with scope when it shows up. No illuminated EP. Why or how would I use one?

Hi Brian, welcome to the forum!
I have an Orion 80EDT APO that I use with the ZWO ASI120MC on an AVX mount.
For my setup, if I remember right, I need to take the focus out to 4cm with a 1.25" extender. I have a flip mirror too, but I have not had to use it with my 80... I use it more with my VRC8 which is harder to get aligned (longer focal length, so smaller field of view). I need a better eyepiece (6mm I think to replicate the camera).
Lately, I have been doing a lot of solar, so I have a filter wheel added, which changes things up. I may have to go out to 7cm with my filter wheel. Again, I'm not 100% sure on that, sorry.
At the end of the day, I've gotten very good results with that camera on the Moon. Not so much on the planets yet -- but I'm trying to use my VRC8 with the camera since it has a longer focal length (this will give me a bigger image of Jupiter) and the VRC8 causes me problems for some reason. I have not yet tried the camera with DSOs because I have more sensitive cameras for that. I should give it a try. I just havent had enough clear skies this spring and summer to do simple observing much less experimentation!
