Was poking about Maplins, looking for stuff, and came across the toy section. Couldn't resist buying a Hubsan X4 Quadcopter to relieve my boredom and have a second childhood. Mental to try and fly indoors when you have no clue. I almost landed in the dogs water bowl in the first 30 secs. Then crashed onto the cooker, the fridge, the table and lost it under the cupboard. Such fun. The props have taken a bit of a beating, so have bought a couple a spares packs and another X4 with HD camera, and some extra batteries. I think I've found another money pit.
I may even be getting the equivelant of aperture fever or a touch of prop fever, as in I want bigger already. I must hide my credit cards.

Wow!! for action stuff that would be amazing. Not too expensive either, but not shipping until 2016. I wonder how fast it can fly?

My son and I just got out our JDI Phantom and flew it in the nearby park. I really enjoy it and so does he -- just the basic flying -- we haven't even put our GoPro on it yet or tried to rig it to pick something up.

I'm jealous already Rick. I've been watching a lot of You tube vids and the phantoms are very popular RTF quadcopters. They look nice and seem to work well. I can see something like them in my future.

The Phantom is pretty rugged. It also has GPS; in high wind, it will auto-correct to keep itself hovering in about the same place. It will also auto-return to its launch point, but I have not yet set that up right.
I recommend checking out Ebay... tho they do hold their value quite well.

I don't use it Rick LOL! If they flew one out to here it would takes hours The one they set up in Sydney only delivers within about 1 mile of the shop. It apparently has a camera attached so they have a recorded video of anyone that doesn't pay or attempts to damage or steal the Copter Personally I think it's stupid and won't catch on. The cops are already trying to get it banned. Councils don't have any laws against it yet.

Haha, stealing it would be easy Ken. Order a pizza, and when it lands, sack it from behind to stop the blades and turn it off. hehe.
Burnt out a motor on my little quad already. I may have to buy some parts. Luckily I bought a second one and a third bigger one as well to keep me happy. Its all good.

I have three ready to fly quads, two with cameras, plus four large kits waiting assembly able to take GoPro & DSLR, just no time the past 12 months. Have been a R/C aircraft flyer all my life-it is in the blood. Love building/flying the unusual things. and doing aerial photography way back with film cameras, then video TV etc, used to build my own Tx-Rx equipment long before this became an off the shelf job. My first radio was a one valve TX and a two valve Rx back in 1957, progressed from there. picasaweb.google.com/109921669020426367250/RCSkyCamAircraft?authuser=0&feat=directlink

Great pictures Shevill, way way beyond anything I've even dreamed about!
Live video from the air is really exciting to me and I'm anxious to get my GoPro hooked up to my Phantom!

Great pictures Shevill, way way beyond anything I've even dreamed about! Live video from the air is really exciting to me and I'm anxious to get my GoPro hooked up to my Phantom! Hi Ric,
I used to do a lot of aerial climatology work for the University, I could make a flight with sky-cam 12 foot wing span, ever hour on the hours from dawn till dusk, taking images, temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, this data was transmitted to a receiver system on the ground and recorded into a laptop for later analysis. For me to do this was a fraction of the cost of hiring a plane & pilot for a whole day at $210/hour. I used to fly sky-cam to 1.3 km height by eye, 10 minutes circling up & 10 minutes down. We could plot the height and thickness of temperature inversions etc. to determine when it was the best time for a paper mill to release a plume from one of its plants. Of course, I can carry a ton of gear in a plane this size and stay airborne for a long time, far in excess of any quad or octocopter, but these come into their own for lower level work with modern miniature digital gear.
Lots of fun and gathering scientific data at the same time.
Clear skies... Shevill

Great stuff shevill..so much for just being boys toy's Hi Davy, I will scan some more images and data graphs which show the results, the flight path up & down is interesting, shows the height at take off run & landing plus the touch and go around again, coming in too fast. Some pics show dead trees over a large area so farmers can equate this to rainfall or lack of etc.
Very busy at the moment preparing my gear and dome to attempt a Pluto occultation 30 June. I have a Prof Jay Pasachoff- web.williams.edu/Astronomy/people/jpasachoff/) coming over from the USA, as groups do for these once a year down under Pluto events. They are sending me a very special and expensive supersentive CCD FLI camera system with its GPS triggered exposure system, laptop, cables software etc. Only 10 of these PICO systems exist, (occult.mit.edu/_assets/documents/publications/PICO.pdf ) made specially for very faint occultation events. I am hoping it arrives well before so that I can learn how to set it up and use it!
My helicopters and tricopter/quads have to take a back seat as I am also trying to complete my big polyhouse greenhouse ready for my hydroponics systems. Got the 210 micron 0.2mm thick agricultural plastic on last week, now the hard work starts with getting it all fastened down, hard stuff to work with-over a 6x4x2.5 steel structure. Nearly mid winter with frosty mornings and snow down to the 300m level.
Will reply in due course re the ZWO cameras.
Clera skies, Shevill

Brilliant photos..it may be old equipment but absolutely fantastic must give you great pleasure working up there..you could not get me out of there if got in..lol... Was any of the previous occultation put on the web, I would be intrested in reading it.. I would like the forum to have a scientific section, it would be great to be able to cater for beginners right up to the scientific community. looking forward to your help on an intro to zwo cameras at your convenience.. If the forum or members can help on your occultation project we would be pleased to help. Davy
